installation CDs
OT but a lot of you guys are technical-minded. Is there any reason to save installation CDs, like from printer, airport, laptop, etc., after you've successfully installed what you want? If you need that stuff later, you should be able to download the latest versions anyway, right?
Just trying to do some cleaning up. eP |

I save them. For rebuilding a machine it can be useful. Although most drivers are available off the web and are more up to date so you really only need a basic network card driver to get yourself going, but it can be nice to have the video driver as well sometimes.

Some vendors have been known NOT to make all bits available on the web. A case in point was the Palm TX where one option for HotSync was ONLY available on the original CD.

I keep most of the installation discs. Those that came with my notebook and my computer I keep in one place. They are handy when having to do a reinstall. However, when reinstalling for some hardware I download the latest from the manufacturers website when new drivers/software is released regularly (mouse, graphics card, Blackberry, etc).

Canon and Garmin have their stupid rule that only "upgrades" are available as downloads.
In order to reinstall from scratch (crash/formatting or new PC) you'll need the original CD's. Or, you can do what I did, make an .iso of the original disk(s) and keep them on a backup HDD. The installation is way much quicker then than from a sloooooooooow DVD-drive. |
