Few files in the same format

Hello all.

Is it possible to add for one book few files in the same format? E.g. I have two versions of one e-print in one format but in different quality: some pages are differ, but I can't merge them.

Thanks in advance, Denis.

You cannot add multiple files of the same format to the same calibre record. You can, however, have multiplke Calibre records with the same author and title, so the way to handle this is to create a duplicate record for the book and attach one book to each record.

However, calibre should be able to. I have converted mobi to mobi within a single book, resulting in two mobi format files in the same book entry: MOBI, ORIGINAL_MOBI
Therefore it is possible, just not allowed when importing from an outside source. An additional drop down menu item should be added to the "Automerge added books if they already exist in the calibre library:...(1)Ignore...(2)Overwrite...(3)Create record...'NEW'(4)Add Duplicate Incoming Formats.

There have been many occasions where this would have saved me time. I have quite a large collection which I continue to populate with detailed metadata plus custom columns, I would love to be able to add duplicate formats to records until I can get around to dealing with them properly.

Thanks.

Given enough time and resources you can do anything.

That feature is there to preserve the original mobi during a conversion, otherwise it is overwritten and lost forever. If something went wrong with the conversion settings this could be very bad.

Anything is possible, but this is not "not allowed" since what you desire is currently not a feature of calibre.

If you have the skills you might want to code something and submit a patch to Kovid. If you don't have the skills maybe this conversation will spark and interest among someone with the needed skillset and s/he will code this and submit a patch to Kovid.

I can see the argument for having this feature, but for me personally I think this is a recipe for ebook pea soup. I think you should sort the wheat from the chaff prior to placing the books in the library but that's just me.

I also would love to be able to have 2 files in the same format in one book entry (adding already existing ones, not converting).
Before this new feature were implemented, I have lost (hadn't deleted an original so could recover) an original book then I converted in the same format.
Now I have some books for example original pdf and converted one and I would love to have one entry for them, instead of making my library twice as big with double entries (also trouble syncing with goodreads and similar if there are a few entries).
I think since it is already allowed to have two files in the same format in the same calibre folder, it could be expanded to just adding already converted files.

Hope someone who is capable will work on this

@dwanthny - Obviously my post really bothered you, as you felt it needed to be cutup line for line. Your ability to condescend and whine in equal measure is quite impressive.

I don't have the time to go through it line by line, but basically you paraphrased, and expanded on points I made in the original post; All obvious or implied. I was showing that it was possible, indeed inherent in the code, how it may look aesthetically, and the use.

"Pea soup". Please, that's all in the implementation.

Take your own advice...To Paraphrase...There's no crying/whining in....

You're entire post was a misleading, and an abusive use of an existing feature. dwanthny explained how this feature is intended to be used so new users don't end up in a situation where they lose their books. He was also nice enough to point this out and how to eventually see something similar to what you asked for become a reality.

My entire post was an abusive use of an existing feature? I understand you all are like "club" members, and need to support each other. However, your statement is incorrect. I am abusing your software, and showing others how to as well? Once again no, incorrect. Incidentally there was nothing "nice" about his approach.

Well I will admit to replying to his. Additionally, when I am just agreeing with a few people regarding an alternate means of file management, I do not expect to have someone take it personally. Going on to tell me "of course with time anything is possible" [subtext being? you idiot] then adding that if I have a problem "write it myself" "no whining" [subtext being? you can't so quiet]. Seems some personal attacks are tolerated.

lmao - Sorry, but that is funny, thanks Dad.

Wow. I don't usually have issues with you folks. Infact I go out of my way to write my own code...recipes...etc. and read before I ask, to lessen your load (I've been there) hence few posts. To think all this over an insignificant comment in a small thread I happened to read while thinking about my own and several other data management / virtualization issues.

Alright, enough. Can this end now. I was irritated, then pure humour, now it's old.
