How to get Contacts from Outlook to eDGes

So I finally got around to putting my contacts on my eDGes. I don't have a Google account of any kind and I haven't rooted my EE or PE.

I did a search and found this: https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=137521. Following a link posted by Szegan, I came to this: http://ed.am/software/android/import-contacts, which told me what I needed to know, i.e. you can import contacts in the vcard format (.vcf) from Outlook to an eDGe running Ermine via a USB stick or SD/miniSD card.

I had a couple of problems -- one I solved one I didn't:

My Outlook is old (2003) and I had to open and save each contact individually to get the right format. The Import/Export option in the overall file menu did not have Vcard or .vcf as an option.

Everything went smoothly on my PE (except I forgot to unmount the USB stick ) and I was able to see the new contacts coming in to join the few I had added manually. However, my EE wasn't as kind to me. There I had no contacts entered to start with. When I hit the menu button and told it to import from USB it first didn't work -- needed to be in the USB0 slot, not USB1. Then it appeared to be working but no contacts showed up in my Contacts app. I checked my Contacts shortcut on my desktop (from SmartShortcuts) and there they were!

So the import worked, but it isn't integrated completely with my email apps (on either eDGe) and my EE shows no contacts at all in the official location.

I didn't think of reading the manual . . . would it have helped??

I did a mass migration of my contacts from palm desktop to yahoo to Google. Then I synced to the PE. Works great!

I used vcf to go from palm to yahoo. Because of the old palm exporting behavior, each phone entry for a contact will generate a separate entry for the same user. I ended up with a mess of double or triple entries. Some entries had half a dozen records. It was a mess! Luckily yahoo has an address cleaner in beta that'll merge the multiple records. Lucky me.

I then used CVS to export to Google contacts. Works great.

One sync and I was able to get over 500 contacts onto my PE.

I get sync errors when there is nothing to sync.

Gary

One way of doing it, unfortunately, one-by-one:

-select Contacts folder -> select contact -> Save As -> select vCard format -> save.

Another:
- export all your contacts from Outlook in csv format and import into online service: Hotmail, Gmail.
