calibre and epub covers issues

Hi everyone,

Looks like I have a minor issue with getting the covers to load up from calibre to my nook touch.

I let calibre download the covers then I used the "save epub only to disk" option to my micro SD card. Once I look up the books, It doesn't show the covers. These are not converted from another format.

Any ideas? I'm new to using calibre

Convert ePub to ePub - yeah it's strange to say that, but that's the work-around.

I don't always like epub->epub...sometimes I don't want to tinker with a retail epub because Calibre does unexpected things to it.

I've had good luck with kiwidude's Modify Epub plugin - you can use this to change the cover pretty frequently without doing a conversion.

I more or less routinely make ePub to ePub conversions on my books when adding them to my library. Apart from getting the cover in place I also cut the margins (remove fake margins).

You can right-click the book and select tweak ePub. Explode the file and then replace what ever is serving as the cover with the preferred cover. Usually, you'll find it in ...\OEBPS\Images

The only way the conversion from ePub to ePub works though is if you strip DRM. Which I stii can't get to work so my side loaded pubs are coverless.

ahh, thanks for the advice. The epubs I have, luckily have any DRMs removed already

The issue with the Nook and covers has to do with how the Nook expects the cover to be marked in the opf. It looks for a very exact string. Any deviation, even if it still conforms to the EPUB spec, and the Nook will ignore the cover.

calibre when converting to EPUB will be sure to write the cover marker so it will be picked up by the Nook. Simply changing the cover won't rewrite the marker of it is correct (but not in the form the Nook requires).
