Kobo Touch Vs Kindle.. Sorry.. :)
Hi
![]() Rather new to the whole E-Reader experience. I went ahead bought a kindle, and I do love it. The screen is awesome. But, alas, I just found out that it does not support Epub. And, while they have a huge selection of books, they don't have all the ones I am looking for. Eg Under Heaven by Kay, many books by Tad Williams, etc. So. Which one do I go with? I looked at the Kobo at the store, and I like it, but, the screen doesn't seem as nice. And I noticed it did have some ghosting issues. I could see the previous page still on the screen (Not fully, just a ghost of it). Has the firmware update solved this?? Sorry if this has been repeatly asked. I did a quick search but to no avail. Thanks all. ![]() |

Are you not in the US? I see Kindle editions available for the book you listed, and several for the author you listed.

Yes, the newer firmware allows you to choose to do a full refresh every 1,2,3,4,5 or 6 pages and dropping it from the default 6 gets rid of ghosting. They have also added a number of new features (browse the Kobo forum on here for details). It's worth checking what the firmware version on the display model is as they tend not to get updated and are missing functions/fixes that the current firmware has. Not quite a perfect reader yet (but getting closer), but I love mine and couldn't do without.

I checked the Kindle store, and I see no listing for Under Heaven by Guy Gavriel Kay. They have the unabridged audio version of it, and some of Tad Williams work (Shadowmarch series) are not listed either. Maybe I'm missing something? I'm in Canada btw.

Probably not available in Canada. Here's the link for the US store:

I see. Thanks. Even thought I have the 3G Kindle 3, I cant order this book? Interesting. Not sure how I feel about this. I think I am leaning towards the Kobo touch. Man, I hate choosing. ANd no, having two isn't really an option.
Thanks for the link. |

It's because of the publishers. Whoever has publishing rights in Canada has not yet released the ebook version.

As stated, the publishing rights for eBooks are by country, and currently the rights for those books in Canada must not be owned by the US publisher.
The simple solution is to create a US address for your Amazon account. And then switch your country. (This will require some creativity in having an address, though you can get around the credit card requirement by using gift cards.) |

If the Mobi version isn't available in Canada, then neither will the ePub version be.

A few of the large publishers are starting to separate US and Canada contracts. I forgot which ones. Penguin could be one of them.

These books are available from Kobobooks in Canada:
Under Heaven by Guy Gavriel Kay: http://www.kobobooks.com/ebook/Under...4dg/page1.html Many Tad Williams titles: http://www.kobobooks.com/search/sear...ad%20Williams& Amazon has a limited selection outside the U.S., and is often missing titles available from other online ebookstores in that country. This, together with the closed proprietary format restriction, is why the Kindle is not so popular outside the U.S.. |

With Amazon, you have to use a VPN that will give you a US IP address. Amazon and B&N both check for that. In Europe, the free promotional books all cost a couple of Euro if the IP address is not fixed first.

Amazon doesn't check for IP when you are trying to buy a book. I know that from personal experience, since I live outside USA, have a account with a US address and buy books with no problem at all.

They actually do. You'll find that at some point they'll send you an e-mail asking you to provide proof that you are in the country that you say you're in. You may get away with it for a while, but not long-term.
