Man Booker Prize Longlist Announced

The longlist for the 2011 Man Booker Prize for Fiction - the ‘Man Booker Dozen' - is announced today, Tuesday 26 July. The 13 books on the list include: one former Man Booker Prize winner; two previously shortlisted writers and one longlisted author; four first time novelists and three Canadian writers. The list also includes three new publishers to the prize - Oneworld, Sandstone Press and Seren Books.

The titles were chosen by a panel of five judges chaired by author and former Director-General of MI5, Dame Stella Rimington.

A total of 138 books, seven of which were called in by the judges, were considered for the ‘Man Booker Dozen' longlist. They are:

Sebastian Barry On Canaan's Side (Faber)
Carol Birch Jamrach's Menagerie (Canongate Books)
Patrick deWitt The Sisters Brothers (Granta)

Yvvette Edwards A Cupboard Full of Coats (Oneworld)
Alan Hollinghurst The Stranger's Child (Picador - Pan Macmillan)
Stephen Kelman Pigeon English (Bloomsbury)
Patrick McGuinness The Last Hundred Days (Seren Books)
A.D. Miller Snowdrops (Atlantic)
Alison Pick Far to Go (Headline Review)
Jane Rogers The Testament of Jessie Lamb (Sandstone Press)

Another poster put me on to the Man Booker Prize nominations and said that the list was an excellent source for good reads.

I frankly haven't heard of most of these, although I do know the name Julian Barnes. Has anyone read these?
One book that I have heard of is Patrick deWitt The Sisters Brothers (Granta). It's on my Wish List. Has anyone read it? tia

Funny... Just picked up a copy of the Patrick deWitt book this week because of a recommendation on a local weekly indie newspaper (the author was born in Canada, hence the Man Booker Prize, but lives here in Portland, Oregon). A very strange little book. I don't know whether I like it or not yet. It's told in the first-person from the point of view of one of the brothers and the dialogue is just plain strange.

I've always respected the Man Booker short and longlists, though have disputed many of thier eventual winners. The only name I know on the list this year is Alan Hollinghurst, who has won the prize once already for his Thin Line of Beauty.

The Man Booker Prize list is usually a pretty eclectic list, with some gems and some

I lost a huge amount of faith in it after Ian McEwan won with Amsterdam, which was clearly a political compromise decision when two of the judges could not/would not agree whose favourite should win. It certainly shouldn't have been the risible Amsterdam (my review here, if anyone is interested...)

Of this list, I only know 2 of the authors (Barnes and Hollinghurst) and none of the books, so I can't comment yet.

The booker is usually a very good source for a good read. I am working myself through the longlist, which I challenged myself to be finished with before the winner is announced in october. I began Monday, and I have read the Sebastian Barry one (I loved "the scriptures", one of his other books, so it was easy to start with him), which I highly recommend, and the Jane Rogers one, which I did not like much. Hollinghurst and Barnes are among my favorite authors, so those I will maybe keep for last. I think I will start Derby today.

I ended up reading the Yvette Edwards one, just finished it, and it was very good too. Not as good as Barry, because Barry's prose is one of its kind, but with a very, very good storyline. On to the next one....

Edited: could not resist, am reading "the stranger's child". Have a strong feeling it is going to be the winner, although I think Barnes and Barry deserve it too. All 3 write beautifully imo.
