Using a mounted Kindle?

Hi,

i'll make it short: Is there any way to access the filesystem of the K3 while still being able to use the device itself?

edit: I'll answer this myself: Using usbnetwork hack, you can access the filesystem while your Kindle can still be used.

Best regards

I'm not sure if that's possible... as far as I know the filesystem is locked wile being accessed. But then again, I'm not a 'real' tech geek

Thanks for your reply. The usbnetwork hack in combination with sshd works fine for me.

So you can now read a book and browse the filesystem simultaneously? Color me impressed.

Why would you like to do that?
Seriously, I'm just as curious as a cat.

(plus, there is a proverb or maybe call it common knowledge which states "don't try to fix something that is not broken!" )

Who cares why one might like to do it... I'm more impressed with the skills it would take to pull it off.

I can't even read with a TV or radio on and not be distracted. Using your kindle and accessing its file system is pure skills

This instantly pop'ed up in my frontal lobe:

[EDIT: image removed by Moderation for not meeting "family-safe" guideline. Thank-you for self-reporting. Marc, Moderator]

As the WHY, i was asking with what "purpose".
Most people interested in watching the ACTUAL data flow are doing it, in order to find the way to hack it (feed modified data).

[I couldn't find rules related to the image posting. It's not nudity, and its not precisely gore. Mods, i ll report, so you rule on it yourself]

I can actually see a use for this as I wished I could do this as well

Well now you just have to share. I thought I had a pretty good handle on most geeky needs (being a geek myself). But I'm having a hard time imagining a need to access the filesystem while reading/browsing (and I don't consider anything else to be "using the device").

What's the scoop?

I have two cases that that feature would be handy

First: I make up simple HTML pages with links on them that I
have in with some of my collections (links to reference sites etc)
It would be handy to be able to edit the doc then test it without
having to mount and un-mount the kindle each time.

Secondly:
I normally try to keep things organized into folders By default when you
pull a book down from Amazon it drops it into the Documents directory.

Many times at lunch (at work) I'll look for new books and send them to
my Kindle. Since all I want to do is to organize a few books It would be
nice to be able to move the book into the folder with the PC then add it
to the collection via the kindle (without having to use a 3rd party app).

It would just make things more convenient.

Just playing around actually. But as you can see from Harry's ideas, there are always use cases where this can come in handy.

Ah... I see. So you don't technically need access to the filesystem at the same time you're using the device. You would just like the ability to access the filesystem easily (quickly) without plugging in and unplugging and all that entails. Gotcha.

But really, even access to the filesystem wouldn't help you much in your scenario, without having the ability to directly edit files with the Kindle keyboard. That's another feature entirely which wouldn't technically require the ability to browse the filesystem at the OS level. You want a file editing app.

I'm confused. I can do that right now. I move the book to a folder with my PC and then using just my Kindle, place it any collection I choose. Where does the third-party app enter into that?

This might not be useful to people with better memories or more consistency than me, but what I am considering doing follows.

I have nearly 100 books on my kindles and want to put them in subdirectories in the documents directory with names that match my categories. With simultaneous file system access while viewing, I could do my ls, mkdir, and mv on my computer while I can see the categories and what is in them on the kindle screen.

None of my kindles have wifi, so I would be stuck using usbnet, which I have yet to get around to messing with.
