Which files do I move to clone my Kindle?

I need some help making sure I move the correct files from one Kindle to the other so that all the books are there as well as the collections and the last page read bookmarks. Obviously, I move the documents but after that I am guessing and I would prefer to do it right.

Just grabbing everything from the normal "documents" folder will get the last page read stuff, DRM documents won't open on the new unit though.

As khmann said, most Kindle ebook files have DRM (encryption) and are locked to one device only. You can download them again from the Amazon servers on the new device.

I am not talking about at DRM books, just the stuff I loaded directly from here and ManyBooks.

What about the Collections?

Keep in mind that the new Kindle will have to do its own indexing after the documents are copied. Be sure to leave it on the charger for awhile after the copy, perhaps overnight if its a large library.

Best practice is to copy small batches at a time and letting the Kindle index that batch before making the next copy.

You raised an interesting question; does the Kindle use up a huge amount of battery power while it is indexing like 1800 books? I have just today noticed a massive amount of battery drain along with general slow down and this would explain it. I moved the old indexing files over as well and it sound like that was counterproductive.

Indexing that many books will suck the battery down big time (I'd plug it in while it's indexing). You may also possibly notice it locking up or rebooting itself and it may slow to a crawl. It's generally best to add a library that large in small segments.
