Learning latin recommendations

Of late I have really started to notice the influence Latin has had upon the English language, but more so the phrases that are used throughout my economics and law text books (which I have to google to get an understanding of).

Given I have finished my university studies I thought I would start to allocate my evenings to 'me' time instead of 'uni study' time, and thought I would spend a portion of that time and try and get a grasp on understanding a little Latin.

Does anyone have any recommendations for good resources for learning Latin? I would prefer ebook format so I can carry it with me (compared to purely online as I'm not always connected)???

I can warmly recommend Lingua Latina per se illustrata. It focus more on reading and understanding than grammar, and I think it's a great choice if you want an easy self-study introduction to Latin, to be able to read a little and learn some words.

I don't know whether the CD rom version will be useful for your ebook reader though. I've only tried the p-book.

Direct understanding

This direct method, based on understanding from the context, has proved efficient both for self-tuition and class teaching. An important factor is the satisfaction experienced by students when they discover that they can actually read and understand Latin immediately without translating or decoding. Such direct understanding gives the students self-confidence and develops their faculties of observation and reasoning, faculties that will be greatly needed as the sentences grow more complex. Reading in this way, they move on step by step toward the ultimate object of Latin teaching: the reading of Latin literature in Latin with real understanding and appreciation.

Before CJ Cherryh was a writer, she was a teacher of Latin... Here's a link to her Latin lessons. I know it's web-based, and I think you will find it interesting and useful.
