E-books on ink side.

I am a noob!!! I am running 2.2 thanks to everyone here... the update worked perfectly. Now I am just trying to feel my way around the PE. First off, I noticed that a bunch of different apps I try to download tell me, in really small print, that I don't have permission to use them.

My real problem is what e-books will actually work on the ink side? Kindle App loads and reads on the tablet side. Can I only read PDF's on the ink side? Is there a program to get the Amazon books on the ink side? I tried to load the kindle books in the eink library and they don't work.

I have been trying to read through a lot of threads to try to find a solution to my problem.

You can read epub on the e-ink as well if they have no DRM.

To convert e-books use Calibre, also google Apprentice Alf's blog.

Calibre is an open-source library manager to view, convert and catalog e-books. Cross-platform (Linux, Windows and OS X). The forum is here on Mobileread. Get the program here.

Hey there, Joe!

If you want to read books that are still DRM "protected" you can do it through Adobe Digital Editions on your computer (then sideload to your eDGe) or by using the Nook app (books can be read either on the e-ink side or on the LCD) or probably several others. I think you can also download directly from bookstores such as Booksonboard or Google.

You can get ebooks from your local library as well, if you're lucky. Those will have to go through either the Overdrive Media Console or Adobe Digital Editions (I think!).

I wish I could be more specific, but I use Calibre for all my books, no matter their source, and then load them onto my eDGes using a wireless LAN transfer.

Good luck, have fun, and keep searching -- your answers are out there!!

P.S. I don't know what that fine print you are getting means. If it continues you might want to ask in a new thread.

P.P.S. Some of the links in here are probably broken, and they're a tad out of date, but you might still get some very good info from these 3 "Welcome Basket" threads originally posted by Borisb: https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...ghlight=basket, https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...ghlight=basket, https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...ghlight=basket

Filark, have you been able to get Calibre to recognize the PE directly as a device and display the library? I have not. I've had to load from Calibre onto the sd card and plug that into the PE. My novel I just usb connect then it and its library show up in Calibre as a device. Much easier to manage the library.

I got all my drm protected nook books to display on the e ink side of my entourage.

1. download nook for pc and create an account on B&N.
2. purchase books or download previously purchased books
3. download trial ver of Ipubsoft nook drm removal tool
4. the B&N downloaded books will be under documents\My Barnes & Noble eBooks
5. run ipubsoft and enter your first and last name & credit card used to buy the ebooks
6. ipubsoft will export the drm free epub file in the output directory shown.
7. Optional import into calibre (this will title and name your book with the cover image)
8. transfer into your entourage device.

Ipubsoft also has drm removal for other sourced like adobe, and kindle. for kindle you will have to convert using calibre to go from .lit to .epub. after removing the drm.

BTW Calibre does recognize both my entourage edge & pocket edge when connected via usb cable

Though we can not discuss how to remove DRM here on Mobileread; I hope you didn't pay for Ipubsoft, as there are "FREE" tools available.

Edit: $35.95 Holy S**t! Doesn't say what the trial limitations are...

you know I did not even think of it being a taboo subject. since you actually have to buy the book to be able to remove the DRM. (Or at least know the persons name and credit card info)

I believe that if I purchase an ebook I should be able to use that ebook on any device I please.

if this is a taboo subject please delete it. or let me know and I will delete it.

I know there are free ways to do this. however the ones I saw involved using python shells and were complicated. this is very simple and worth $30 one time fee. If B&N wanted to charge me a one time fee for being able to download drm free I would do it.

Just my view on it.

The nook app works great.. you just download your book and then you have to go in and load it manually and put it on eink.

The kindle app is a different story. It saves the book in a different format which the PE reader can't recognize. There may be a way to convert it but I haven't really checked all that much into it.

Simply put, if the book is saved as a .EPUB or a .PDF then it can be viewed on the eink side.

some of the barnes and noble free ebooks do not have DRM so they will work without doing anything to them.

Most of the ones you have to pay for drm will have to be removed before the PE/EE/ Calibre will be able to view them

Yes, Calibre recognizes my PE and works just as you say it does with your novel. If you are properly "mounting" your PE when you attach it to your PC by USB cable, Calibre shoud see it and put checkmarks next to the titles you have on your PE. Unless your version of Calibre is a lot older than mine??

If it still isn't working or you need instructions on mounting, let me know! Good luck!

Filark, as I don't have a PE could you check in the manual if it tells how to mount the PE using the USB cable. If It does we can then point new users to it as I thing most of them haven't read the manual before they ask questions.
