264 dpi! that's almost laser printer resolution. I may be missing the obvious here, but can someone explain why you would need a 264dpi screen? Or is this a beat up?
Edit: There seems to be quite a few rumours about hi-res screens. I guess the future is print/photo quality screens. Just think, you will be able to stick your iPad on a colour copier and get a reasonable reproduction. Can't quite see the use really but I suppose it's "Build it, and they will come". The only way to combat the hideous blurry effects which anti-aliased fonts produce is to up the resolution to the point where there the number of partially-on pixels (those that are set to various levels of grey instead of on or off in order to create the illusion of greater resolution than is actually available) is reduced to a minimum or eliminated entirely. And since virtually every OS for every device from eReaders to tablets to phones to computers are forcing anti-aliased fonts on us users, the advancement of screen technology to the point of laser-printer resolution can not possibly come soon enough.
264 dpi isn't nearly enough resolution to entirely rid us of the evils of anti-aliasing, and replace faux-resolution with actual resolution, but it is a big step in the right direction, at least for LCD screens. Last edited by toronado; 07-10-2011 at 04:09 AM. |

I guess being over 50 and needing glasses the thought of needing better resolution on the screen rather than my eyes had eluded me. Obviously I need better resolution of the eyeballs before the screen resolution can be appreciated.

NOT
GOING TO HAPPEN The foundation for all these rumours is a press release put out by LG claiming that it would show an 'ultra' high resolution 9.7" screen at the Display Week 2011 show in LA in May. What did they actually demonstrate? A 10.1" screen running at 150ppi. Such screens are already being used in Android tablets. Samsung, on the other hand, did actually show a prototype 10.1" display running at 2560x1600. But anyone who follows tech news knows that Samsung and Apple are currently locked in a massive dispute over the 'look-and-feel' of their respective products, and the chances of Samsung allowing Apple access to their cutting-edge technology are negligible unless a far wider deal is agreed. And secondly, this was a prototype, which means it's about a year away from being produced in anything like the quantities needed for the iPad, which sells millions of units each quarter. The only concrete basis to this persistent rumour is the presence of HD-sized display assets in the iPad firmware. I'm sure Apple is preparing for a high-res display, but the simple fact is that such displays aren't going to be available in the mass quantities needed by Apple for another year at least. |

Thanks Charlski, You just confirmed that my original hypothesis that it was crap has been changed from NOT GOING TO HAPPEN to, it's going to be late.

First time I hear of anti-aliasing "evils". Would you rather read with jagged fonts?

If you've ever used an iphone you will understand how great a high-res screen is. And to me, iPad needs to match the quality of the iphone screen, even if it's a much bigger technical challenge to do it on a much bigger screen.
And to the PP: yes, on my old PC I used to turn anti-aliasing off and read with jagged fonts, I preferred it to the "blurry look." Now my macbook has good enough screen that the anti-aliasing doesn't bother me. eP |

Yes, well it's a shame that more people don't put it that way, but I thought I'd try to be as expressive as possible.
![]() Most certainly. A well-hinted and properly designed screen font will have minimal jaggies due to having more squared-off shapes than curves, and look completely crisp and clear. To me, this is much better to look at on a monitor than it would be with smoothing, or "faux-resolution" as I like to call it. |

Have it your way... but I stand by the last part of my post, the one sentence you omitted, "The only time something is definite, is when it exists to buy/clutch in hand..."
