this file otherwise views perfect, toc, cover and ncx buttons all check out in kindle preview. whats the dealio and should i care?

I'm assuming the page map has to do with creating the companion "page" files for mapping page numbers to a physical edition of the book. I don't know if there's any publishing guidelines/specs for the page map available yet.

As for the cover image size, i believe it's looking for 600x800... bigger is too big, smaller is too small.

Just keep in mind that "warnings" are not "errors."

Just a note: some of the fonts you're using in the "Availability" section (location 10), do not work on the Kindle (or Kindle DX). They only show as ugly question marks. Most of the fonts will work in Kindle for PC (except the one between Malti and Nederlands). The situation is the same with the Kindle for iPhone or iPad. The Kindle Previewer can be invaluable for checking these things.

Excellent feed back, i read many posts on this subject here and elsewhere and found none that addressed the exact problem or that it may not be an immediate or even relevant problem at all. I will proceed without a page map at this time.

My cover is 480x768, my 60 covers that is. 600x800 seems too large to me, mine will suffice.

Fonts have been a trial with both mobi and especially epub formats. for mobi at least only 6 remain of concern, epub lags behind with 17 languages not supported by any means i have tried or seen. Someday perhaps.

The kindle previewer is a must have if anyone has not seen it. it is not kindle pc, they should draw a greater distinction between the two, i only discovered the peviewer two weeks ago. two years too late.
