Simplest ebook Converter
Here is the simplest ebook converter I have ever seen. Saw it on either Gizmodo or Engadget yesterday. It is Free and I Love it.

I would feel much more comfortable about companies like that Hampster software if I knew what exactly their revenue model is supposed to be. Not that it has to be anything harmful, cost free software that uses subtle revenue generating tricks seems to be the popular thing nowadays.

The fact that it is listed with a Facebook address raises all kinds of red flags with me. Facebook is about as scummy as it gets when it comes to data mining. User/downloader beware...

I didn't even have to log into a facebook account to download it. But I agree with PerterT there are other ways. It is a good converter if you don't want it, no feedback is needed.

That is an interesting question since it is based on the Calibre engine. Here is a quote from their support page.

"Hamster Free eBook Converter made by HamsterSoft and based on Calibre-engine created by Kovid Goyal and inherits all GNU GPL 3.0 restrictions."

I suppose we won't know if it does more than Calibre until someone tries both.

Given that it is using calibre and is being distributed in binary form without source code and with a license incompatible with the GNU GPL v3 (calibre's license) it is illegal.

Besides being utterly immoral in that it uses calibre and does not acknowledge that fact anywhere in its user interface.

kovid, is there anything you can do about that? calibre is such a fantastic tool it seems so wrong that some idiot can basically steal it. I'm not sure what the ethics are surrounding open source software, but without even an acknowledgement....that sucks. Keep up the good work with calibre

I plan on reporting the GPL violation to gpl-violations.org. Other than that, for the moment, I just want to get the word out about these parasites.
