Lowest price for Reader

I am still in a market for a reader to gift to someone. I thought it would be a good idea to start a thread to share the best deals for the reader.

The lowest I have been able to find it is at Amazon for $291.99. The shipping is $5.49 regular and $8.49 expedited. The biggest advantage of buying it from Amazon is that you do not have to pay tax which comes out close to $25 on most other places.

Circuit City and SonyStyle both have the reader for $279.99 + $25 tax making it $305 + shipping.

Does anyone know any place that has the reader cheaper than Amazon. I am planning to buy it this week.

Buy.com has one of the best prices right now. $247 + Tax (free shipping). TigerDirect is the net best with $250 plus shipping (plus tax is there is a store in your state).

What you could do is wait a bit and see if the PRS505 comes out any time soon and get that and then give yours away as a gift.

Thanks. That's a great idea. I can wait 2 weeks.

Things are getting interesting... Yesterday ABT Electronics (the ones who accidentally leaked the PRS-505) delisted the PRS-500. Today, Buy.com has delisted the PRS-500.

That's funny, FireFox is telling me that "delisted" isn't a real word. Oh well, I'm sticking with it.

The PRS-505 has to be right around the corner. When resellers simply run out of stock, they don't delist an item. I have a really strong feeling that the new PRS-505 is coming out on Monday.

There don't seem to be any fire sales though, like TigerDirect's $99 deal of the past. TigerDirect is still the lowest price though at $249.

I think the fire sale is the SonyCard offer.

My wife just received the Fall Sony Rewards brochure in the mail this morning. They show that the PRS-500 is being offered for 16,000 points ($160.00).

Of course, that doesn't help because they don't have any stock and aren't listing it on the website. I'm leaning heavily towards a next-gen reader, but if I can cash in her points then the old-school reader will only be $100 out of pocket.

While the tech-geek in me wants the latest and greatest (PRS-505 or Cybook Gen3), the practical side in me might buy the PRS-500 if the Sony Rewards website ever gets more stock.

They've been telling people (me included) that there should be more in stock sometime this weekend...

I am waiting for the new model. I hope it launches soon and it's reasonably priced. For those who do not wish to wait, it's in stock at Circuit City and Amazon (cheaper after taking into account the tax). SonyStyle, SonyRewards and Buy.com are still out of stock.

Keeping my fingers crossed.

It was good to wait. I am surprised SONY did not decrease the price of PRS-500 by a lot. It seems to be only available at Amazon now.

I wonder if Sony will continue supporting PRS-500 at all.

Given that PRS-505 only costs a little more than the older model, I am going to take the plunge and get the newer model.

For anyone wanting to save a couple of dollars, the following places still claim to have stock on the PRS-500:

TigerDirect $249
Crutchfield $251.99 / $237.99 Outlet / Scratch & Dent
Vann's $269.77

I imagine we won't see any spectacular deals on the PRS-500, like the TigerDirect $99 one, until the PRS-505 makes it to the general distribution channel in the coming weeks. Currently, it is only available at Sony and Borders.
