Organizing frustrations: what can I & what can't I do

Hi everybody, new joiner who is developing eye problems trying to get libraries sorted out using Calibre and Sony Reader library. I'm just trying to work out what I can and can't do with each one.

Calibre - can rename and edit metadata
- cannot create a new collection
- cannot move files between collections

Calibre frustration: the 'manage collections' doesn't! It only seems to allow you to rename them... grrr.

Sony Library - can create new collection
- can move files to new collections
- cannot rename/edit metadata.

Library Frustration: in the 'books' file there is no way of telling which collection a book has been put into, which is especially bugging if you have a large number of pdfs on your SD card.

Is this right? I think I must be missing something, so please correct me if I'm wrong.

This is giving me headaches. I do research, and I bought my PRS950 to have easier access to journal articles on pdf. Little did I know that e-readers don't use the straight file name, so I'm going to have to rename hundreds of journals in order to make them usable. There is no easy way around this, so I shall just have to go through them. However, I didn't expect that such organizational matters would be so annoying. Why couldn't the just have an option to follow the folders that I have carefully organized them into?

Ok ok, enough grousing from me! I look forward to other members opinions about these issues, and hearing if you've managed to get around them.

If you want folders, I suggest you to look into PRS+

Actually, Calibre can create Collections. At least on my 505, Calibre's tags turns into collections on the Reader. So, say you have a article from Science about Climate Change, you can tag it with Science, Climate Change, and maybe the year too. Then the tags turn into Collections on the Reader.
But maybe Calibre cannot manage collections created on the Reader?

You can also arrange the order of books in a collection (drag and drop).

I haven't managed to do this with my new 950 yet, in part because I need to figure out whether modifications are needed to accomplish the task with a Mac, rather than a PC.

hey, I installed PRS+ and everything was sweet - even had a game of chess!

However, after I shut down and powered up, PRS+ disappeared! It went back to its default OS.

I was pretty worried at first, but after reading the installation guide I found that others had encountered this problem, and solved it simply by rebooting again.

So yes, all my organizational problems have been solved by the PRS+ system: I can now browse the plethora of pdf files on my SD card in their original folders with their original file name. No need to muck about with sony library or calibre tags, or waste time renaming files.

A happy happy man.

A quick question for the PRS+ wise amongst you:

I assume the issue that you cannot open files from the 'SD card via Mount' is a well known one that will be fixed eventually?

Its good to have a reference to the original file name, but it will be truly useful when you can open files without the message "Error opening book you probably have to reinsert card"

Calibre DOES create new collections and DOES move books between collections.

If a new collection based on the standard items, if you add a new item, next time you sync, you will get the new collections. Same for moving, change the info in Calibre and sync and the books shows up in the different collection.

So if you have collections based on author name, add a book with a new author, and when you sync you get a new collection based on that author's name.

If you wnat to create collections based on custom sets of data, you create custom columns and then edit the Sony Plug In to create collections from that column, sync and the new collections are there. I just added a custom column for SubSeries. For those books with entries in that column, collections are created and books put into the new collections.
