Nook in the wild, specifically BN stores, for Read in Store.

I love going to Barnes and Noble. Go there at least once a week for at least 30 min. Almost every time I'm there I get a beverage from their cafe.

A salesperson showed me the Read in Store feature of Nook 2. But the cool thing is the coupons, such as for beverage, that show up when you bring a Nook to the store. This is really great! I can imagine bringing Nook 2 into the store, reading one hour of something, enjoying a drink, maybe buying an ebook if it's any good.

So my questions are:
- How many people bring their Nook into the stores? I haven't seen any in the wild, only in captivity (display models).
- Do the Read in Store work well? Any limitations set by publishers?
- What happens if you root the Nook (or Nookcolor for that matter)? Do the Read in Store still work? Do the special offers still show up?
- Does the Read in Store or Special Offers work for Nook apps on Android or iPad? So instead of bringing a Nook I bring in a tablet.

Yes, I bring mine in, though so far I'm the only one. But I tend to go in at odd hours when the store is about to close. So that could be it.

I primarily go into my store to use the Read In Store. It works pretty well, you have about an hour to read each book then it kicks you off. I wish it would give you a warning or something, but it just tells you to come back tomorrow to keep reading or to buy the book.

It does save bookmarks and the last page you were reading when you come back the next day.

I've heard (at least with the NookColor) that rooted Nooks lose the Read in Store feature. I'm not sure if it applies to the current Nook, but it's a safe bet that it is.

You know, I haven't tried with my App on my iPhone or iPad. I don't think it does, I've never seen it mentioned anywhere except on a BN device.

On NOOK 1st Edition, you don't need to go to the store to see the coupons. I don't know about the new NOOK. The coupons only appear occasionally (once every few months), and the ones for food/drink only apply at B&N stores that have a B&N Cafe, as opposed to ones with a connected Starbucks store.

Read In Store is worthless where I live, because there's no place in the stores to sit and read. This is a local decision by the store management, but from what I've heard, the majority of B&N stores have removed most of their chairs. The booksellers won't even let you sit on the floor to read.

Read In Store is controlled by the publishers. Some e-books are eligible for Read In Store, others aren't. You can't tell which are and which aren't except by going to the store and trying them.

That is interesting, I frequent 3 different B&N stores and no chairs have been removed and people sit on the floor to read all the time because the chairs are often all taken. The one closest to me has tables and chairs outside the Starbucks boundary and you can almost never get a seat because so many people are there reading, working or studying.

If B&N were to actually make this change they might as well close the stores because if you cannot hang out and browse books who would go there.

I do bring my nook to the store and have on occasion seen others do the same. I wish they would make a deal with Starbucks so the free drinks coupons work there too. I am jealous

Ditto here. The BN has plenty of seating and most nights full to the brim with the overflow sitting on the floor.

My wife and I bring our nooks in about twice a month. We are bookstore junkies. when we first got our nooks it's was every friday LOL

Read in Store, I enjoy, the publisher's have put a lease on it. When it was first out, almost any book was available, but that has been trimmed. There are still alot of titles available and there is now a section when your nook connects to the BN's wifi that list's all the available title. It works well and saves them. I still have a bunch still on my nook color. I can only access them once I'm back in BN, for obvious reason. I like it and it's a great concept.

I don't believe the coupons and the read inStore works on the nook android app. but I've never tested it either, so I can't say for sure.

But it is one of the nice points about the nook. I love the freebies from the Starbucks Cafe and the coupons etc. it adds another dimension to the nook that other ereaders don't have.

yeah ours has about 4 huge comfy couches and a bunch of high back comfortable chairs plus the seating in the Starbucks cafe as well. It's very enjoyable.

That's annoying. My local B&N has a couple of different lounge areas, and individual chairs scattered all over the store. Possibly because there's a college campus within walking distance.

That, however, is more likely an issue with the local fire marshalls, who object to even the slightest chance of something blocking the aisles in an emergency.

I have no idea what the stores in my area are like, because I've never been in a B&N; and doubt I ever will.

If I ever do decide to read inside a store, I'll do it in a library instead.

I have the same problem. I took my Nook to the B&N store all the chairs I remember from years ago are GONE. When I asked the manager, just out of curiosity, he looked at me like I was crazy, but I remember those chairs.

There's nowhere to sit and I can't sit on the floor, so... Read in Store was a big disappointment for me. I tried sitting in my car once, but the WiFi was too flaky at that distance and kept booting me.

Let corporate know. How can you take advantage of an advertised feature when the store deliberately blocks your attempt to do so?

Do the car reading bit in front of a McDonald's. You're much closer and no dropped connection.

Sure, but the Read in Store feature requires you to be connected to a B&N wifi point, no?

Alas, I've written the B&N CS department several times on more crucial matters, and have never received ANY indication that a human was reading my emails. I fear a request for chairs would be equally poorly received.
