In the leftmost pane, how do I get the list of authors to display alphabetically (i.e. in sort order)?

Left most is the Tag browser (if open).
at the bottom of that, there are 3 pulldown boxes.
The top one should say 'Sort by name'

If you are refering to the 'Author(s)' column.
Click the header. the arrohead indicates direction.

If the order is not correct. the the metadata 'author sort' is probably RED

and you need to correct the errors
There is a tweak to control the auto Author sort fillin

The algorithm used to copy author to author_sort
Possible values are:
invert: use "fn ln" -> "ln, fn"
copy  : copy author to author_sort without modification
comma : use 'copy' if there is a ',' in the name, otherwise use 'invert'
nocomma : "fn ln" -> "ln fn" (without the comma)
When this tweak is changed, the author_sort values stored with each author
must be recomputed by right-clicking on an author in the left-hand tags pane,
selecting 'manage authors', and pressing 'Recalculate all author sort values'.
The author name suffixes are words that are ignored when they occur at the
end of an author name. The case of the suffix is ignored and trailing
periods are automatically handled.

Names in the tag browser (leftmost pane) are always sorted by the author's sort value. The displayed value can be the author's name or the author's sort value; this choice is determined by the "Use author sort in Tag Browser" (categories_use_field_for_author_name) tweak.

If the sort value is "Blogs, Joe" (common is Lastname, Firstname) and the author's name is "Joe Blogs" (Firstname Lastname order), and if you are displaying author names, then "Joe Blogs" will appear under "B". If you are displaying author sort values, then "Blogs, Joe" will appear under B.

I have changed all my authors' names to Lastname, Firstname because I don't like to look at:
Agatha Christie
Rex Stout

I'd rather look at:
Christie, Agatha
Stout, Rex

But there is no option to DISPLAY in this order. This is now my Author Name (because I edited them all).

Somehow Calibre keeps overwriting my choice of "sort by Author" to "Sort by Author Sort" choice, so it is never in order. There are no options to Copy all Author Values to Author Sort values.

Do I report this as a bug?

tick the box that says "automatically set Author Sort"
press OK

Because without my help
1. Calibre does not give me the option to copy FROM author TO author sort
2. Calibre keeps flipping around the author Lastname,Firstname TO author sort Firstname,Lastname

Nope. Automatically set Author Sort returns FirstName,Lastname. Keep in mind that my Author = Lastname,Firstname, so selecting automatic sort flips it around.
