MICRO SD CARD ISSUES? KoBoTouch

I was wondering if anyone had any comments on the micro sd card use in the kobo touch? I know that it took some time for my ereader to navigate and process my 3000+ books over 15 mins to process. I was wondering if that would cause a lag when you read the books, search the books, etc. Obiviously I was enthusiastic to place all my books on my machine, just so I could have my own personal on call LIBRARY. The question remains though does this cause problems that may drag the reader down? Increased power consumption? Any one with more information or experiance with large Libraries that might be able to offer insite from any level of KoBo readers?

regards.

We've identified the problem and we're evaluating a fix.

Lol. I like to read. And i read fast and alot. Consider this, if the ereader has the potential to contain up to 30,000 books why not go for it. That of course would depend on what you read, size, magazines subscriptions, news papers etc. All those things can alter capacity i would think. But just for fun I would like to hit the max!

Hey G.T Thanks for the info. Can you provide more information on this problem? Do you guys at all post any information on updates, what they fix, what problems have been identified? I think that this would be a very important thing to know, I at least would find this very much helpful plus it would help us the users troubleshoot the issue and escalate it on a more educated level. Freeing up resoureces for Kobo and providing a more efficient and pleasent experiance.

Any way one last thing Thank you so much for being very upfront with us. We KOBO users really do appreciate it alot.

I've been using the SD card for non-ebooks, like my reference picture collection. It makes a pretty good secondary screen for quickly bringing up cheat sheets for Linux shortcut keys and even setup instructions for when I'm installing something that needs fiddling with the boot.

Would be great if there were a documents section I could stick stuff in, but it's not that big a deal.

I tried plugging in a microSD card from my camera just to test that the card slot was working on my new Kobo Touch. The card had a few hundred jpeg photo files on it. The Kobo Touch was "Processing..." for about 15 minutes before I ejected the card and powered off/on. There were 6 of the jpeg photos from the card listed in the Books list, and a bunch of memory MIA, so I figured the database was corrupt. I did a Factory Reset and started over. I won't do that again!

Depending on how many files there are, it might actually have been reading reading as it said, (provided you SD card is fat32 or possibly one of the ext file systems). I've read that some people here have so many files that it takes upwards of 1/2 an hour to get their huge collections to register. As far as I know, the database doesn't get corrupted from SD card sideloads. When you read a book from an SD card and then accidentally pop it out, the book database just goes back to normal, which leads me to suspect it either doesn't use the sqlite database, or it forms a temporary one somewhere else which gets autodeleted after some type of check.

I figure it probably was still processing, and possibly it's very slow handling jpeg photo files too. But it highlights 3 problems:
1. It's way too slow processing large numbers of files on the SD card. The firmware could use some tuning there.
2. There's no indication of progress, a serious shortcoming when your processing is extremely slow and your database can be corrupted by interrupting it.
3. Absolutely it should not corrupt the database to pop out the SD card while the Kobo is still processing.

That is a fair point.. I would like to see a progress bar.. peace of mind there. At least when we come back we know.. how far its going etc... would be nice to have percent meter for power usage as well...

You know though, content search would be a great feature due to the fact that some times one has to reboot and restore etc... it would be nice to be able to find a certain phrase and go to it if thats all we remember about where we were if we got lost or if we are reading a paper book and switched to the epub version
