I love my Kindle.

I've had a love hate relationship with my Kindle. I hate the screen. That e-ink is like sandpaper for the eyes if you aren't outside in bright sunlight. I love the free worldwide internet access. I had doubts about it in the start but I've been traveling about the world with it and it works like a charm. For that alone, I can put up with the screen. Having internet whereever you are whenever you want it, I love my Kindle.

I have no idea what this means. I find the e-ink screen to be extremely pleasant to view.

I also find it very easy on the eyes. It took awhile to get used to the page flash though.

For straight reading, I feel the Kindle's screen is phenomenal. It's easier to read, most of the time, than actual paper books.

Not for me. The extreme lack of contrast is deadly. I find a LCD far more soothing. It's especially bad on many webpages since the text is rendered in grey. I wish there was an option to render everything in monochome instead of greyscale. But an eyestraining page is better than no page at all.

I find with paper books there is a tendency for slight bleeding of then print - nature of putting in on paper. But e ink is just sharp and crisp.

my 2cents: I can kinda see where the OP is coming from, but I don't feel that way at all myself. My K3 screen looks quite excellent, even at night with a light.

For sure, an already excellent technology that will get better and better [I hope].

LCDs are indeed tough on my eyes for extended periods - I notice I get eye fatigue quite alot with marathon LCD sessions.

Good for you. There are a lot of strange people around. Me, I like reading books on my Kindle. That's it. I quite like the screen.

The surfing the web experience on the Kindle is, well, poor. Wait, that's why I got a small notebook computer, isn't it? Bingo.

I browse for, and buy, my Kindle books on my iPhone, and have them sent to my (3G) Kindle. Web browsing on the iPhone is a heck of a lot easier than on the Kindle.

We had our son take the Kindle on his backpacking tour through central Europe, and he is sending daily Facebook, and occasional gmail, messages home from country after country. Aside from the tremendous total cost of ownership difference, googling shows this would have been mind-bogglingly complicated with the iPhone. By contrast, international borders, at least in Europe, seem pretty much non-existent with the Kindle. I think that Whispernet fees vary, but we keep the personal document limit at $0.00 so that one's a non-issue. The only remaining difference was the need to send him away with a charger plug adapter costing, I think it was, 87 cents. So, from where I sit, which one is a heck of a lot easier depends on what you are doing.

Meanwhile I am reading perfectly adequate Kindle alternatives available over the counter at the public library.

This perspective on the Kindle's usefulness may not quite fit on a board concerning mobile reading devices, but I figured I would place it somewhere, and your post has hereby received the honor.

Depending on your data roaming package, it may have been fairly expensive, but why do you say it would be complicated? Roaming is totally transparent as far as the end-user is concerned.

Sure, the 3G Kindle's web browser is useful for some purposes. But for me personally, given that I already have an iPhone, the browser on the iPhone is much, much better, which is why I prefer to use it to buy my Kindle books. I'm certainly not suggesting that anyone should buy an iPhone for that purpose, obviously .
