No, it doesn't; syncing only works with books purchased from Amazon.

As DaipDealer said, it will work just fine if the book is run through Calibre. I've tried it.

EXTH record 501 cannot contain 'PDOC', it must contain 'EBOK'. You used to have to use Mobi2Mobi to change the EXTH records, but now calibre will give it a fake ASIN (based on the UUID) if it doesn't already have one when you format shift. |

What do you mean by "run through" calibre? Import a DRM-free mobi or prc book into calibre and then use calibre to add to my device via cable? Because if I send it via Amazin via email then it'll cost me $1.99 AFAIK.

Not exactly what your post is about, but you can send a document to your Kindle for free over wifi by emailing it to your @free.kindle.com address.

Thank you. I wouldn't have thought I needed to convert to make it work, so that's very helpful.

DiapDealer is correct, I sync non-Amazon books all the time with my iPhone, iPad2 and Kindle. I re-converted all of my mobi books in Calibre to have it assign a ASIN which is used to sync to the furthest page read, regardless of which device I use.
Everyone knows it works with Amazon purchased books, but again, it also works with non-Amazon books. |

There might be something I don't understand here. I tried converting a DRM-free book to .mobi in calibre and loaded it to the Kindle app on my iPhone and iPad via iTunes - but syncing doesn't work.... I used the most recent version of calibre BTW.

Someone with an iP* will probably be able to give you better details, but I don't think you can use iTunes to sideload the books for this. It doesn't seem to put them in the correct folder (or something like that). Most use iPhone Explorer or DiskAid. Check out this thread for a lot more detail.

Thanks for the tip. I'll try to download iPhone Explorer when I get home tonight. Might do the trick
