Touch Sideloading with external cover images possible?

When sideloading the cover image is pulled from the EPUB itself. I've found that the Nook is very picky of how the EPUB is constructed in order for it to extract the cover. About 1/4 of the books I've sideloaded don't show a cover.

I haven't had time yet to really investigate what to Nook requires for covers.

Does anyone know if it's possible to specify say .jpg for it to use for the cover? Or how an EPUB must be constructed in order for the cover to display?

I'm assuming that since the touch is similar to the color what applies to the color might work with the touch.

What I have been doing since I got the NC and it also works for the Touch is to specify a .jpg image in calibre to use as cover and convert epub to epub. when I sideload this file manually (just dropping the .epub file to the Books folder in the NC or touch, not using calibre which transfers a folder that contains the .epub and also the .jpg for the cover), it always shows the cover. The reason I started doing this for the NC is that if I transfer using calibre, the .jpg for the cover would be added to My Pictures and I ended up with all the cover images in the same place as my photos or wallpapers and that annoyed me.

For those that do not show the cover, I manually edit the OPF file. What the nook seems to want is an entry in the manifest named "cover", pointed to the cover image, like this:

The only issue is when there is already an entry with that name, you have to do some additional changes.

I tried putting a .jpg named the same and the EPUB on my Nook. It doesn't use the .jpg as the cover. It appears the Nook STR will only use the cover inside of the EPUB. It looks like I'll be doing an EPUB to EPUB conversion before sending to my Nook.

That's correct, only the original nook reads the thumbnails and uses them as cover.

I just tried that, I moved some files from the main memory to the SD card. Unfortunately those on the SD card do not show the cover. The files on the SD card only show when you select "My Files" in the Library, and then "Memory card". They all show a generic cover, not even with the title it in, the title is below the generic cover.

Did you put them in a books folder on the SD card? If you do that and look at them under Library > Books rather than Library > My Files does it show covers? I seem to recall on the NC that made a difference in icons on some files. Also were the sideloaded books that you transfered from main memory to SD card EPUB format or PDFs?

Ah, they do show now, I wonder what changed. I copied the files using Calibre, so they were in the right folder on the SD card, but wouldn't show on the Library. Now they show, and the covers are there. Go figure.
