Question Poll: How would you like an Edge running Windows?

I have tried to create a poll, but it seems the option to post a thread as a poll, which is mentioned in the Help page, is not available.

I followed the steps and when I sent it, a message came back: "This will be submitted for approval" or something similar.

My poll was something like this:

"How would you like an Edge with Windows 7?"

If Entourage offered an Edge, just like our Edges, but running Windows:

1) I would buy one even if it is more expensive.
2) I would buy one only if it is not more expensive.
3) I wouldn't want one even if it's cheaper.
4) I have no idea.

I am interested to know what people think about this here, and considering that frequently some of us mention a tablet running Windows, either existing or announced, in this Forum, it could be a relevant discussion.

If anyone can get the poll to be published on my behalf, go ahead please. Some days passed since I submitted it and I didn't get any reply in any sense from the administrators.

Opinions are welcome. Either in Poll format or in discussion format, we could share opinions about advantages and disadvantages of Android, and benefits or non-benefits of Windows in a device such as the Edge.

Thanks!

Hi Paula, interesting question you have posed. I like the functionality of the Edge. The e-ink reader would be a high priority and if the tablet side was Windows, that would be OK with me. Speed is not that big an issue, stability is. I've been running Windows 7 for 2 years now and find it incredibly stable for me. The price point of $500 US is best for me. The tablets selling for $700US and up are not considered (unless I win the lottery).

Personnally, I'll prefer an eDGe running ubuntu linux than windows :
* open source, stable linux distributions, with gazillions of apps.
* a strong community of fans, developpers etc.
* There's even a port of ubuntu for ARM-based processors ( which are in our eDGes).

* The only drawback (and show-stopper for now) is that there's no ubuntu apps for the e-ink side of the eDGE, and software for interacting with both lcd and e-ink side has to be written ....

Very interesting question. I don't think I would buy an EE/PE running Windows 7 because I already own a Fujitsu Lifebook Tablet Pen pc running Windows 7 and I've pre-ordered an ASUS Eee running Windows 7. The Entourage product is good for what it was intended but at this stage in the game there are more capable and better product offerings in the market for my needs / situation.

As long as it can be rooted and have windows removed then OK. In other words anything but windows - too demanding of resources and battery life.

If you mean the ASUS EP121 eslate, you'll love it. Very capable machine, boots from a cold start in 20 seconds. It runs MS Office like a champ. Battery life is fair at 3-4hrs. Excellent pen-based machine.

I don't want a Windows 7 machine under any conditions, particularly not as my tablet device. I'm still running XP Tablet on my Lenovo. I have an eee netbook that runs Windows 7 and I *hate* it.

Agree with the other tablet PC users here: do not want Windows. If I did, I could get that in a tablet PC. I think a lower-demand "tablety" OS for the LCD side makes more sense unless you're going to drastically bump up the specs. If anything, Linux makes a lot more sense than windows, and I'm with Qwill's assessment on that.

You're basically asking us if I want the Microsoft Courier, Paula. The answer is "Yes" (answer 1).

Personally, I'd like a Windows tablet that displays in color e-ink, with a battery life of at least a few days...I mean, if we're dreaming, dream big, right?

I'd totally go for a Windows 7 version as then I wouldn't have to *also* carry a Win7 book when I travel.

The Edge was/is the only available alternative.

Ditto...and if it were considerably less expensive.

Besides for not running on ARMs, windows 7 would be way too slow and resource hungry for the edge, so you'd at least have to wait for win8.
Given the typical use cases of the edge, I don't think that the OS would make a lot of difference - in particular since we still wouldn't have the ink API So the question really is: which kind of functionality and applications are you missing...

While I understand some of the distaste for Windows, I believe some of it is misplaced anger. I am no fan of the constant updates and other nonsense that goes along with Windows. But this ASUS eee Slate is a fabulous fast machine, completely eliminating many of my prior frustrations with Windows. Running OneNote is a great experience and far better than the Journal on the eDGe. It is fast, automatically backs up to the cloud, and is great to take notes in color, easily cutting and pasting from the screen to make useful notebooks. A Win7 netbook is probably a bad experience because it is an under-powered machine. Thats why they are so cheap. Try running Win7 with 4GB of RAM and a nice i5 processor and you wont hate it.

Having spent the last hour reading 'expert' and user reviews, plus YouTube videos of the Asus Eee EP121; if it had been out in Apr '10, I would not own 2 android phones, 1 EE, and 1 PE. With the current Entourage situation I'm tempted to re-convert.
,,,,,but The phones do the job, and PE form factor and size is so convenient that it is addictive. A better PE will be made by somebody (soon?), Windows or Android. We just have to be patient...ugh.

Thanks for your post
