New user to Pocket Edge

I have had my PE for about a month with serious usage in the last two weeks. It is an amazing device and I am really enjoying it. I had discovered some cool apps such as podkast, and daily papers. I am a kindle owner so I had to have my kindle app, which is great. What I have not figured out is how to watch a movie. I tried converting a movie to mpeg4 and it would not show, did not even recognize it on the sd card. Can someone tell me what software they used to convert their movies? I am not high-tech but I can figure it out with the proper roadmap.

I look forward to future discussions, but I would appreciate your help with this one.

Convert with software that has a setting for iPhone or iPod, that usually works.

Cheyennedonna,

Thank you so much for your suggestion, it worked. This makes me more excited about the PE.

I apologize in advance for the naivete of this question, but do you (or anyone else) have suggestions for good software to convert a DVD to something playable on the EE?

And, would new conversion software likely be needed with the imminent update to Android 2.2?

Look here - it is a two part process, and only legal to back up your own disks - not rip rented disks.
http://www.dvddecrypter.org.uk/

And no, I don't anticipate the format of videos that the edge can play to change, unless more formats are added.

Or you can buy software, like this - http://www.daniusoft.com/

This site gives away software daily, a large number of their giveaways seem to be video decoders http://www.giveawayoftheday.com/

Thanks Cheyennedonna! I really appreciate the information.

To be clear, I have no intention of ripping DVDs I don't own. I am just looking for a way to avoid bringing my large, heavy laptop with a short battery life on the plane to watch a movie or two.

You know, I totally believe in everyone; but put that snippet about legality in for formality sake. I don't want any problems for edge owners or the forum. The DRM protection for movies is tricky and different in other countries too.
Here is a snippet from Wikipedia:
Under United States' Federal law, making a backup copy of a DVD-Video or an audio CD by a consumer is legal under fair use protection. However, this provision of United States law conflicts with the Digital Millennium Copyright Act prohibition of so-called "circumvention measures" of copy protections.

I cannot find where I originally asked about what video formats work best on the EE. The consensus was that conversion for iPod worked best.

I disagree.

I have TiVo and have done some experimentation with different formats. The best format option I found was for "ARCHOS Android Tablet", with "iPad" (not iPod) being a close second. These are larger files, but the difference in video quality is remarkable. I hope this helps anyone else who's looking to watch some videos on a plane/train/automobile trip anytime soon!

I was hoping your statement was universally true... It could depend on exactly what settings a given app or website uses for "iPad" video.

I took a 1080p video and used RealPlayer Converter's default "iPod" and "iPad" settings to convert it to M4V (I had to change the extension to MP4 for the eDGe to recognize it). Neither my EE nor PE could play the video of the iPad version (although the audio did play). Both eDGes played the iPod version perfectly, and the iPod quality on the PE in particular was indescernible from the original full HD on my laptop, mainly because of the PE's smaller screen (which means you don't notice the lower resolution).

I also downloaded both the iPod and iPad versions of the same video as posted on the MSDN Channel 9 website (http://channel9.msdn.com/Shows/Endpo...osoft-Platform). Both already had the MP4 extension. Again, the iPod version played fine on both eDGes, but the iPad version, as downloaded from the website, didn't work on either (other than the audio).

I'm not sure, but iPad videos are probably 720p which the eDGe struggles with, depending on the exact encoding settings. The eDGe has no problem with 480p videos.

So, depending on the website and your transcoding software, the iPad version *may* work, while the iPod seems to *always* work

RealPlayer Convertor doesn't have the "Archos Android Tablet" preset. Given that the Archos tablets are 5" and 7", they may well provide improved quality that does work since chances are it's in fact 480p video, similar to iPod but with slightly better encoding settings.

If anyone else has found iPad videos to work on either the PE or EE, please describe the source of the video or the transcoding app you used.

Thanks for the info, Boris!

Using the free software that Cheyennedonna told us about, I converted one of my DVDs to iPad (H.264 720p), and it worked fine (though, it was small on the EE screen). I am now trying one with the iPod (.MP4, 640x480) setting to see if it makes a difference. I'll let y'all know

EDIT: The iPod format was the same screen size as the iPad-formatted movie, was much faster for conversion, was about 20% smaller in size, and had very similar quality.

I used Aiseesoft DVD Ripper (thanks to Cheyenne) and with conversion I used the Android MP4 Video-profile. Nice on the eDGe (EE), good quality.

I use Itunes converter. Just add the video to the library. Click on the video under movies. Click on the advance tab. Click on convert to ipod/iphone and it converts. Copy the new video (there will be two) to a usb for transport. I use it mostly for home video in. mov format. Have not tried with full length.
