Cool Remote RDP: Use your Edge as a little Tablet PC

While my Edge works very well as a paper replacement and surf tablet, I wanted to use it as a replacement for my Windows Notebook also. Now I found a great solution:

Setting up a cheap Windows PC that can be accessed using Remote Desktop Protokoll allows me using Windows from my Edge while sitting on my living room sofa. I have tried serveral RDP clients until I found one that is available without market access and works well. You can find the free version here: Remote RDP

There is a PayPal address in the middle of the page, where you can also buy enhanced editions, although the free version works quite well.

Especially when using Windows 7 on the PC, touch control works surprisingly well, allowing for true touch control e.g. of Microsoft Office applications. This somehow uses Windows 7 native touch support! Also surfing with IE works well including Flash, OCX etc.

But there are also limitations: The main issues are with keyboard and mouse support. The Edge touch keyboard covers a lot of the screen real estate, so you need to scroll your Windows out of the way, to see the text you're typing. This is better with an external keyboard, but control keys like Ctrl-A and Alt-Key combinations do not work, making text input more difficult than on a real notebook. Also the right mouse button and mouse wheel do not work as expected, but there is a good replacement using a long press for context menus as usual for Android.

In general I am very happy with the solution. I have never expected to get so much functionality out of my Edge! Next thing to do is a VPN connection to my home network from outside.
