Post The boot time for eDGe is way too long

Each update seems make the boot time even longer
Must the OS be that huge?

Noticed that too. I've gottten into the habit of not turning it off. I just let it suspend/go to sleep by shutting the case. I have a charger at my desk at work and at home, so I rarely see the edge less than 90% charged.

That's really the only drawback the bugs me. Years of Palm OS's instantaneous start-up spoiled me a bit.

But it might be the eInk. Other eReaders I tinkered with all have a long boot time from a cold start.

I tend not to power off as well, but we've been flying every 2-3 days so it's something I've had to deal with a lot lately. I have gotten in the habit of powering on while doing something else.

Boot time does seem longer, but battery life is awesome, so I guess it's a trade off.

Your point is good. but the problem is that the system is very easy to crash during sleeping and carry around, sometimes resulting in losing all my customized settings. =( the sleeping is not reliable at all

The boot time is pretty longish. In my experience, if you have a lot of apps (as I do), a number of them load at start up, delaying it even further.
I use 'Start up cleaner 2.0', which unfortunately prolongs the boot time even further, since the cleaner program seems to be killing apps that load rather than stopping them from loading.

I am anxious as everyone else to see Android 2.2 but I do hope they really clean up the clunky OS when they prepare the update.

My experience is similar to henry-moh above in that sleeping is very unreliable and often results in a dead system requiring battery removal to re-boot. Battery removal in itself is rather difficult as I have mentioned before. I am hopeful that Android 2.2 may solve the sleep problem.

For the record over my first weekend with the Pocket Egde I have seen the problems with sleeping as well, it seems to stem from how long the machine is sleeping, but have had to restart it three times now, and there is no way to remove the battery that I have seen..so I hope it is easily fixable...otherwise I will have to deal with the longish boot times as I do not want to face this issue when I need it for something, only to have it frozen and unresponsive.

I know its early and I am certainly not complaining, but was looking for threads on the boot time one and the freezing two and found them both here! I'll continue to mess around with it this week at work and see how it does for me.

It wouldn't hurt to contact Tech Support so that they get an idea of how many people are experiencing this issue.

You had previously mentioned a "reset pin hole", which I'm hoping is the equivalent of removing the battery on the full sized eDGe.

I normally turn it on and keep it on all day. I do turn it off when I recharge at night. I initially had a couple of quirks with the sleep mode, but I discovered that if I lock the screen out first and wait about 2 seconds to make sure the lock function is actually complete, I can close the eDGe and it "wakes" up perfectly fine every time. For the last few months of putting it to sleep, I haven't had any problems with it waking up.

I discovererd the same solution as kemar i.e just shutting the tablet and reopening (for Eink only use) is not sufficient but screen lock wait then shut tablet and if using the reader open or leave shut to sleep works fine.

Coming out of sleep its best to wait for the little pfiz noise before pressing the menu button.

I would assume so, it is along the top edge on the e-ink side, just beside the USB ports, and it of course, reads "reset"! I gave it a shot and presto, it worked, good advice that, I have contacted them for the audio reasons, I will add this one in, thanks again!

This may be something on newer models. On my edge there's no pin hole or "reset" label anywhere around the USB ports, or on the eInk bezel, anywhere else on the edge. Is it under one of the round rubber stoppers? I assumed those covered screws.

You're right - it's something on the newer model. They had to provide a reset button because the battery isn't removable. On our enTourage eDGes we just pop out the battery, which is less elegant, but accomplishes the same.
