An option to shut down the reader process
The interaction betwenn the two sides of the edge is surely awesome, but not always necessary.
It would be very useful to have the ability to close the "Reader" process when not needed. For example, if you are using the edge only as a netbook, the cpu and memory resources are partly vasted to run the readerin background. Closing it would make the device more responsive and usable while using flash lite (from the upcoming update) or games. |

Actually, the e-ink side of the device doesn't draw power from the battery when there's a static image on the screen. It only uses battery power when you're changing pages, making annotations or using other functions that result in a refresh or a change in image. The e-ink screen behaves differently from an LCD screen. I explain a few of these behaviors in my post about e-ink technology, which you can find here: http://www.entourageedge.com/forums/...standing-E-Ink

Yes, the wacom RF hardware appears to be always active. Killing the reader program doesn't necessarily mean the wacom hardware gets switched off. It could still be powered but with nothing polling it.

I found one problem that was hindering battery life. I had the built in mail program configured to check my gmail account every 10 minutes. I found that even when the wifi and LCD were turned off, every 10 minutes the mail program would turn on the LCD and try to connect. It could not find a connection, would eventually time out, and screen would again go off. But every 10 minutes that process would repeat. It was enough to have a serious effect on battery life.
I ended up removing the email account and now just manually check my email through the browser. |
