"Better Terminal Emulator Magic" provides a simple shell console allowing inspection of the operating software guts of your edge. Not recommended for the inexperienced or faint of heart.

Works acceptably.
Does not currently support the edge full screen.
Provides MINIMAL shell functionality. Do not expect to run bash scripts willy nilly.

based on posts in another forum, later versions of this (3.04+) apparently work full screen!

I'm using connectBot for my SSH client. http://code.google.com/p/connectbot/

It's a little tough with the soft keyboard, but with external kbd ...

You can connect to other machines, and to "Local" for fun exploring ... I was surprised I could get to /bin and run top ... without a real kbd I could not exit it though

[EDIT] After I RTFM ... I discovered that a single click of the trackball = ctrl and a double click of the trackball = esc ... this help, but still need a better virtual keyboard

I just installed the latest SVN download from the Connectbot site, which actually runs full screen on the Edge.
Thanks for the tip on the trackball.
That helps much.
Double-click activates in irssi properly so I can actually use it to switch tabs!
