Post First Entry, Duty Log

Ahoy there,
This is SeaDaddy46, a retired Chief Petty Officer in the US Navy. I have always been fascinated with reading. One of my earliest memories is of a cousin reading the newspaper to me at age four or five, and neither of us was in school yet! I found the idea that all those marks and squiggles actually conveyed facts and ideas absolutely fascinating! I moved throughout my childhood, and couldn´t take all my books with me from place to place. Then I joined the Armed Services, and moved like all Service people do. I´ve always been curious about computers. When I discovered ebooks, I was ecstatic! Now I have at least 3,000 volumes in my library; a separate 500GB harddrive dedicated exclusively to my books. I have several ereader apps, and a new Kindle, which goes nearly everywhere with me. I have experienced some remarkable things in my life. So, don´t be surprised if I upload a few for review and critique by all you dedicated lovers of the written word.

Good to have your company, SeaDeaddy. My own 'Sea Daddy' was a Petty Officer in the RN during WW2 (Fleet Air Arm on carriers), but the Old Man's long gone now. Like you, though, he was an avid reader ... he would have loved a Kindle. Safe sailing, happy e-reading and best wishes. Neil

My seadaddy was a IC1 (Interior Communications Mate, First Class). He did a good job of keeping my six out of trouble, and teaching me the ways of the fleet. This was during the final days of Vietnam. I did all my sailing in the Pacific Ocean.

Currently, I am reading Ben Franklin´s Autobiography. What a man! What ingenuity; he took situations that were dangerous and didn´t seem to have much of a solution, and created solutions that both parties liked, and made a tidy profit for himself in a number of them. He early developed the ability to think critically, then learned to hold his tongue until asked for his opinion.

I would like to see a discussion of sites for free/inexpensive books, or trading sites. Maybe there are some in the other forums. I will have to look.

Lots of places to go for free and bargain-basement books, SD, when you find your way around. Much depends, of course, on what kind of books you enjoy. Quite a few historical biographies, for instance, are in the Public Domain and available for download in several digital formats at the Patricia Clark Memorial Library here at Mobile Read, Project Gutenberg, etc. Very best.
