Secure eReader (formerly Palm)
I was just over at ficitonwise.com and found a book I have been looking for, but it is only offered in the following formats:
Secure eReader (formerly Palm) Secure Microsoft Reader Can the iLiad read either of these formats? |

These formats are not directly readable on the iLiad.
If you can't find a Secure MobiPocket version, the Secure MS Reader version can be exploded to a DRM-free .oeb e-book (mostly html and images) on a Windows PC using, for example, ConvertLIT. If you zip up the resulting files and change the extension from .zip to .oebzip, then FBReader can read it. Alternatively, convert the exploded html and images to a DRM-free .mobi (.prc) file and read it with MobiPocket Reader or FBReader. |

I bought the Secure Microsoft format. What #@#$% pain in the @#$% that was. After purchasing it, I had to download the book using IE for Windows (I am Mac user). So I try downloading the book again, and the ficitonwise.com said I couldn't even download it until I activated MS Reader. So then I downloaded and activated MS Reader, which errored out about seven times, and I had to create a Passport ID just to complete activation. So I did all that, and FINALLY was able to just download the @#$% book. It downloaded fine, and I could read it in MS Reader. Found the file, and downloaded the ConvertLIT GUI software. When I ran the software it "exploded it" into HTML (I think - there are a bunch of HTML files in the conversion folder). Two questions: 1. How do you not explode it and just remove the DRM as you suggested. and 2. What is Book Designer? |

I don't know how to do it on a Mac, but on a PC you use the command line and type clit.exe oldfile.lit newfile.lit You have to have the file names twice. Newfile.lit will have the DRM removed but will be otherwise identical to the old file. Last edited by Nate the great; 09-08-2007 at 01:32 PM. |

I'm doing it on Windows XP in Parallels - I had to use the Windows OS to even be able to download the file.
What a piece of @#$% (MS Reader, that is). |

Book Designer is a program used to create ebooks. It will create MobiPocket format.
But then there are tools from MobiPocket to create ebooks as well. |
