broke my kindle :(
So, I've owned my kindle for less than a year and I've already broken it... I dropped it on asphalt and it split open at the seams. I squeezed it back together and it looked alright. However, while I was using it, it would freeze randomly (probably when I happened to put pressure on certain spots). At that point, I had to fiddle with the power switch until I could convince it to restart. Being an engineer, I naturally had to open it up to try to fix it. Now, it doesn't work at all...
Before I buy a new one, I wanted to know what the procedure is to get everything transfered and if I'll run into any trouble. I don't to report it broken because I might find the time to actually fix it at some point. (Wishful thinking, I know...) |

Sciguy, if your books are amazon books, they are kept in your amazon account and will reappear on a new kindle as soon as you register it. If you call CS and explain what happened, they may maybe send youy a new one free of charge and you get to keep the old one since they are not interested in recovering broken ones.
Hkabir : I understand your indecision, it is indeed hard to chose. With your complexion though, I'd go for the catwoman one if I were you, you'll look lovely ![]() [Moderator EDIT: The "Hkabir" referred to has been deleted as a spammer. This edit is just so you don't think poor aceflor is talking to non-existent people. Sorry, aceflor. ![]() Last edited by montsnmags; 06-02-2011 at 01:57 AM. |

if it's still under warranty, why not contact amazon CS and see if they would give you a new one?

That's terrible! I lost my first Kindle 3 and was upset. From personal experience, getting your Amazon-purchased content to the new Kindle is a piece of cake. All you do is register the new device in your Amazon account and you can redownload everything you've purchased to the new one.
By the way, did you have a cover? Which cover was it? I've been hoping that if I drop it, then my cover will protect it. |

If your books are from Amazon you are good to go.
You can also transfer your collections. Make sure that you move books from the archive or your Manage My Kindle account at Amazon before you chose the transfer your colelctions option. Once you have your books on your Kindle, choose the Share Collections or however it is labeled. Your collections will move and all the books you have on your new Kindle will be sorted into the proper colelction. |

I'm sorry for your loss. I had my first K3 stolen in December and I felt bereft. But I had backed up everything, including, importantly, non-Amazon material, on my computer. When I got a new Kindle I then experienced some problems because I got one of the dodgy unlighted covers. But Kindle CS were very helpful. Now I have a lighted cover and everything works well.
I do hope you resolve your problem soon so you aren't left without your reader. Remember to ask Kindle CS rather than general Amazon CS for help. They might do an exchange for you. |

I propose a 21-page-turn salute to a fallen Kindle. And, someone needs to play Taps. If I still had a trumpet, I would. But, the closest thing to it right now would be a kazoo.

sciguy125, like wyndslash advises, contact Amazon CS (specifically, Kindle CS) and tell them what happened - they may be able to help. While reading, my first Kindle (K2) fell out of my hands and cracked at the top seam; I called Kindle CS about whether the crack could be fixed (the Kindle was working fine but I was worried about future damage). The rep told me they would send me a free replacement, and the following day one was delivered to my address. They also sent me (via email) a return label for the broken Kindle (I had to return it to Amazon by a specific date to avoid being charged for the replacement).
Just call them; you'll only be out a phone call (maybe not even that 'cause if you live in the US you can have them call you ![]() ![]() |

lol. I think tubemonkey has the Taps covered. Me I'm keeping my fingers crossed that PhillipA82 didn't jinx me. I'll have my Kindle 3 for three months on the 15th.

sciguy,
I will be interested to hear what they say. From what I have heard, Amazon is very good at replacing Kindles. My 18 month old daughter almost broke mine a week back. She opened the cover and then tried to turn the Kindle like a page....she had it bent up at about a 50 degree angle before I caught her. Credit to the Kindle, it didn't crack or break. The back cover started to come off so I popped it back on and bent the cover pins back. Everything seems to be working fine and the only remaining damage is that the Kindle is warped a little around where the slots are for the cover pins. After all the stories about the Kindle 2 cracking at the cover attachment points I was really impressed to seek the K3 take the beating it did. |
