French language in Kobo menus--Is it possible?
Our local school received four Kobos. However the Kobo menus are in English and the school is French. Is there anyway to change the menus to be in French?

Isn't Kobo a Canadian company? Please correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought that Canada was a bilingual country, with both French and English spoken. I'm extremely surprised that any Canadian product would not support the language of its own country!

At the provincial level, French is the sole official language of the provincial government of Quebec, so they only have to provide services in French. Ontario, New Brunswick and Manitoba must provide services in both English and French. The rest of Canada (the remaining six provinces) is strictly English. Keep in mind, though, that we're talking about offering government services. And in these provinces packaging is in the official languages. Here in Ontario, everything has both English and French on its packages. The reality for Canadians in their day-to-day lives, however, is different. I took French up until university, but I'm not bilingual because I know *no one* who speaks French, so I never had anyone with whom I could practice my oral French. |

That's what I thought. I thought it was illegal to sell non-French products in QC. Maybe e-readers are a loophole. Odd for a product pushed in French Canada.

So far, I've been unable to find epub books in French. Kobo doesn't sell them. The Sony ebook store doesn't have any. So what exactly are the students going to read on these new devices?

Yeah, I know what you mean. And then all the literature uses the stupid passe simple. Je fus! Je fus! Or whatever it is. And they wonder why French doesn't catch on. Duh.

I imagine that in many countries, no one has purchased rights to books in languages other than the dominant one in that location. So, for example, if you are limited by the on-line store to books that they can legally sell to you, given your location, you will not be able to purchase them.
In the features list for the new Kobo, they say that not only will they have readers in various languages, but customized stores associated with each of them. I wonder if Canadians will be able to choose FR or EN versions, like we do when we log into BestBuy. Quote:

bahh.. We are so narrow minded...
you can buy french electronic book in epub format on french store... like Fnac.com.. (you buy it then download it and put it on your kobo ..).. just use your credit card... the good thing with digital electronic is that you don't need to wait for the boat or plane travel and a stupid +30% on the sell price of french book ...
