Free (nook/Kindle/Sony/Borders) The Dogs of Rome [Police Procedural Thriller]
The Dogs of Rome, 1st in the Commissario Alec Blume series by Conor Fitzgerald, is a police procedural thriller free courtesy of UK publisher Bloomsbury's US division.
Currently free from B&N, presumably to promote the soon-to-be-released 2nd book in the series, Fatal Touch. Bloomsbury was pretty generous about putting Ruth Downie's Medicus in all the major stores the last time they offered a freebie, so there's probably a decent chance this'll also pop up in other venues. Description In this accomplished and riveting thriller, police inspector Alec Blume battles organized crime, political pressure, and his own demons as he investigates the death of Arturo Clemente. Blume, a clever American expatriate with a disposition against authority, soon realizes that he is being watched from on high. Forced to negotiate with powerful, suspicious people on all sides of the law, Blume must rely on instinct, drive, and luck to find the killer. The Dogs of Rome is both a thrilling detective story and a vision of underground Rome. Blume is a perfect hero for this story: intelligent but flawed, cynical but unafraid. He is a trustworthy and compelling protagonist for this first installment in a gritty and promising series. |

Cool, but I hope I don't like it TOO much - the next one in the series, Fatal Touch, is $9.99 for Kindle (one version already available as of April, 2011), $13.75 at BN, and more than that at Kobo and others. That's a bit pricey for me with so many other books already on my "to read" list.
It appears it might be discountable, but BN and Kindle don't really seem do discounts...other than work-arounds like buying at BN via eBates and with a BN card, or stuff like that. |

Well, if you've got a long TBR list, then probably by the time you've actually read the book, the sequel will have been out long enough that the TPB will have been released and the e-book price thus dropped and you'll be pondering whether to spend the money on the brand-new 3rd or 4th in the series.
Win-win! BTW, Bloomsbury is non-Agency so it'll be couponable at Kobo and Borders and Amazon is free to set whatever price they want, so it might be worth it to put the title on pricedrop alert over at eReaderIQ or wherever. |

No longer free at Kobo. $17.29 now, which i find to be a bit ridiculous.
If you pull up the item page on kobo, it is listed as $17.29. If you do a search, it is listed as free, but when you add it to your library, it wants you to pay $17.29 before you can actually open it in your library. Last edited by Hellmark; 05-26-2011 at 04:54 PM. |

Sometimes Kobo (and also Borders) has a glitch like that, where the free book shows as not-free a couple of days after it becomes free.
Occasionally, you'll still be able to get it for free via the respective reader app and not the website (be sure to remove all credit card info from your account before trying this) if you happen to see a "Download" button with no listed price on either the search listing page or the actual product page within the app, even if it gives a price elsewhere. Sometimes the problem will get fixed before a book becomes unfree, and you can try again later at the website. |

I got it from Amazon, and I gotta say I'm impressed with whoever puts the ebooks together at Bloomsbury - the Series information was in the metadata. First time I've seen that on an Amazon book. Actually, ANY book, because I get ebooks from all over and I don't think I've ever gotten one before now that had the series info.
