New Sony PRS-650 with deep scratch
I got my brand new black Sony PRS-650 from BestBuy. When I opened the box, I realized that there's a quite visible deep scratch on the front black portion on the e-reader near the stylus. It's one of those scratches where you can see it and you can feel it with your fingernails.
It just pisses me off that something brand new has a visible deep scratch. And it would be illegal for a store to sell refurbished products at original retail prices without telling their customers that the product was refurbished right? Luckily, I didn't see any scratches on the screen. Anyone here experienced scratches on their brand new out from the box Sony e-readers? |

I should mention that there's also a pinhead sized bump near the scratched area too. Luckily, I used my fingernail to remove it. It feels more smooth when I rub my fingers through it. The not so great thing is that I'm left with a pinhead sized white dot mark.
So far the e-reader works great! I'm using windows explorer (copy and paste) for transfering e-books to the PRS-650. |

If for some reason you don't want to return it and have them give you another one (which I'd probably do unless you'd have to wait 3 months for another new one), you might consider a skin for the reader to cover the scratch. DecalGirl has a nice selection, they go on pretty easily, no bubbles at all, and when removed leave no residue. I have one on my 350 and love it (the Milky Way design).

No, I have three Sonys and all were brand new and in mint condition. Never had I anything in my 30yrs Sonyexperience that had the slightest sign of imperfection. Take it back and get a new one.

I agree with Poppaea, you should take it back to the store straight away.
Even if they do not have a replacement in stock you can at least register the fact with them and arrange for a direct replacement as soon as one becomes available. Like Poppaea I too have been buying Sony products for more years than I care to remember and not once have I ever had a problem with a defect. In fact in all the years of having Sony Walkmans, Discmans, hi-fi, televisions, computers and now eReaders, I have never had to have anything repaired or replaced. Guess I'm just lucky. ![]() |

I think it's really the shady practice of Best Buy. They probably took a returned product and packaged it up to sell it as new. Probably an original owner scratched it and returned it.

Is that legal in the US? It certainly isn't in the UK although it does happen...

I'm still taking in the fact you were able to buy a black PRS-650 at your local Best Buy a few days back. Where in the name of St. Wilpeggio was this?

Another issue with my Sony Reader! I discovered a dead pixel in the screen about 10 minutes ago! It's a tiny black dot, probably smaller than a pinhead, in the middle of the screen. Anyone here have dead pixels on their device?

Maybe the first CSR forgot to put a defect slip on the item (or it came off) and the second CSR thought there was nothing wrong with it? When I worked in retail that has happened a few times and has happened to me while shopping a few times. Not really a "Best Buy as a company is doing this" kind of thing.

Another interesting note is that another family member in my household owns the same PRS-650 e-reader which was purchased several months ago, same colour too.
The back of my PRS-650 feels cheaper quality, and I can definately say that the material is different. The back of my PRS-650 feels almost like worned out super fine sandpaper!!! The PRS-650 which was purchased several months ago by a family member in my household, feels a lot more rubbery and less slippery, almost a luxurious quality feel to it. |

Yeah, I'm definately going to take this back. I discovered another extremely small scratch at the back. I would be really pissed off at BestBuy if they wouldn't let me have a refund to say the least.

ALWAYS sling things back if they aren't right, straight away.
And if what you say about the materials is correct - something very odd is going on ! Are there any fake Sonys about ? Hardly worth it surely. It should feel like the one you mentioned, that's spot on. And don't be too polite at the store - I think they've rooked you. Allegedly....... ![]() |

Why has no one on Mobileread mentioned that black 650s were being sold at any Best Buy store? If I'd known, I might have bought one!
After all, OP, you can always take yours back within 30 days for a full refund. I made sure of that before picking up a 950 at BB last week. §§§§§§§§§§§§§§ Quick question: Are you sure you bought a 650 and not a 600? I happened to see a black 600 and silver 300 on display at BB when I picked up my silver 950. If they sold you a 600 and not a 650, that might explain a lot. They might even have sold you a display model (though they admitted to me they're not supposed to do that), hence the scratches and other signs of use.
