Just another user looking for the ultimate in ereading. Like everyone else, I am disappointed in the whole lot. I still think that eink is going to take the world someday. I had such high hopes for the Sony reader, but that flicker just drives me crazy. Like the refresh rate flicker in the early computer screens, it just sends me over the edge. I wonder if it might affect some epileptics, the way that refresh rate did. Anyway, I am glad to have found this forum and look forward to exploring the posts.

Welcome to MobileRead!
What flicker are you referring to? An eInk screen doesn't flicker - it's an absolutely static image. Are you referring to the screen inverting between pages? If so, you're the first person I've come across who finds it objectionable. I honestly don't even see it any more - within half an hour of starting to use the Reader, my brain just completely "edited it out". Interesting how different people perceive these things differently, isn't it? You might want to edit your profile, by the way - I think you've put your telephone number in the public field that's intended to show people what type of eBook reader you have. |

Yes, it is the flicker on page turning. For casual reading, where I take my time and my spend 2 or 3 minutes reading a page, I don't mind it much, but for much of my technical and work related reading, I am much faster. The flicker when speed-reading breaks my rhythm and drives me up a wall. I have only borrowed one from a friend to use during a weeklong conference, but after two days, I just could not deal with it.
I am sure they will solve this eventually. Hey, I have waited 8 or 9 years since I first heard of the technology on NPR, another year or two is no big deal. I am patient. |

Vizplex (gen 3 e-ink) is supposed to have half the page turn speed (do it in .5s instead of 1s) but I expect it will still have the flash to black ... come to think of it, I don't think anyone has specifically said on that one way or the other ....

The iLiad doesn't do it, by the way - it just has a blank screen between pages - so presumably it's a deliberate decision by Sony to refresh pages that way. I'd guess it's done to reduce ghosting.

Oh, it's definitely a programmed thing -- iRex refers to it as the refresh "waveform," I think. And the aim is, indeed, just as you suggest: to reduce ghosting. The iLiad may be able to get away without it since they've got a bit more 'developed' display. And as I recall, there was actually quite a bit of debate (we caught faint echoes of it) about jsut what sort of waveform was the best to use.
![]() As I recall, alex_d had come up with a 'flash to white' approach that worked fairly well, with only slightly increased ghosting as the trade-off. I hadn't realized that the iLiad didn't do the "flash to black" anymore, the last time I saw one (early last summer), it did the same refresh the Sony does. |

I have to correct myself here. On close inspection of the iLiad I see the it does flash to black. It's so quick that until I watched it closely, I hadn't noticed it. The "sequence" when the turn the page on the iLiad is:
1. The screen blanks to white for, I'd guess, about 1/4 sec. 2. There' a VERY brief black "flash". 3. It goes back to white for perhaps another 1/4 sec. 4. The new page appears. Apologies for the incorrect information - as I say, the "black" stage of the process on the iLiad is so rapid that I'd completely overlooked it. |

Ah, yes, I see. Thanks for clarifying that, HarryT, I was afraid I'd missed a rather big detail there.
