Interface Button Problems

Whenever I connect my Kindle 3 wireless (not 3G), all of the interface buttons stop working, with the exception of the "get books" one. The drop down menu arrows on the right of the buttons still function, but the buttons themselves just go dark, stay dark, and don't perform the task they are supposed to. This is also a problem on a friend's mac, although she has a 3G Kindle. We are both running OS X 10.5.8 and the newest version of Calibre. Is this a common issue? Are there any fixes?

As a workaround you can right click on a book to send it to your device.
