Author, Edit Metadata, messed up.

With the new version 0.8, if I individually edit any books metadata, and go to the Author dropdown, the list of authors is really messed up.

Anyone else?

This doesn't seem to be a problem in the all in one metadata tab introduced this release.

Mea culpa. It is in all variants of edit metadata single. Fixed in trunk, for those of you who run from source.

I broke this when I added 'Manage Authors' to the edit dialogs. The code to build the list was fetching each author, converting the name to a list of author names (containing 1 author), then adding that list of one-author to the pull-down. My change was to avoid the conversion of the individual author to a list, but I forgot to change the adding-list part to add a single name.

I should learn not to make changes on a Friday.

First, I don't run from source. i have Windows XP and calibre 0.8

I meant to say it doesn't seem to show itself on my current installation using the single metadata tab. I have added books and edited Authors without a hitch. I guess it might be messed up on my machine but I don't see any problem with it using my work flow.

Yea, luckily when editing authors, the problem might not show up. Author's names completion doesn't work, but that is easy to not notice.

To see the problem, edit the metadata of any book and press the down arrow on the authors box to see the possible completions. Lots of '&' characters.

I guess I'll just count myself lucky (or slow) but the author auto complete works fine on my machine. No spurious & characters floating around.

Ahh, I see. Kovid slipstreamed in a new build of the 0.8.0 release.

Those screen images show the manage authors and the paste isbn buttons, both of which were added after the first 0.8.0 release. When you got those, you got the fix for the authors dropdown for free.

I just installed this this about 8 hours ago. So you're saying when I go home to the 0.8 install I did Friday afternoon I will be able to see the &&&&.

Yes. Also, you won't see the Manage Authors and Paste ISBN buttons.

As far as I can tell, the bug fixes in the slipstreamed version are:
- Fix #778795 (author(s) dropdown list shows unconverted list)
- Fix bug in converting downloaded comments into text
- Fix #778949 (Floppy device is on all the time with ver. 0.8)

I think Kovid did the right thing. These are easy/safe fixes of annoying problems.

Yup, the new builds fix those three bugs. I really didn't want a huge accumulation of duplicate bug reports over the week, especially since I'm traveling and not able to respond to them quickly.

What and where is the "slipstreamed" version?

Slipstreaming is a term used to describe building/releasing a new version but not changing the version number. What build you get depends on when you download it.

It seems that Kovid dropped the new build in the normal places sometime on Saturday.

If you installed the original 0.8.0 and can't wait for the 0.8.1 release later this week, then you must download calibre again, uninstall the current version (uninstalling won't delete books or preferences), and then install the newly-downloaded one. The uninstall step is crucial; without it the new version won't install. If you wait for 0.8.1, then the uninstall step is not needed.

Actually, you're wrong. When I discovered I had the first build of 0.8.0, I decided to update. I only remembered that I should probably have uninstalled only after I was halfway through the installer, at which point I figured I'd just see what happens. As it turns out, nothing happens except that the install finished without comment and works fine.
Of course, your mileage may vary, and in cases such as this, uninstalling is a Good Thing to do first.
