I'm not joking; you can only upload to the iBookstore from a Mac. At the very least you'll need to run OSX in a virtual machine.

What kind of vendor locking is that? So, if I make a good epub and I want to sell it so people can read it on there iPad (their choice...), I am obliged to by a Mac?
Imagine Sony would say that if you want a Sony reader, you must have a Vaio...

No, only if you want to sell the epub through the iBookstore. Unless I am mistaken (I don't have one), iPad owners can buy an epub from anywhere, and use iTunes to load it onto their iPad.

There are also third party distributors who will upload to iBookstore for you, for a price.
