RIP Ernesto Sábato

Argentine writer Ernesto Sábato died today. He was 99 years old.

From Wikipedia
Quote:
Ernesto Sabato (June 24, 1911 – April 30, 2011), was an Argentine writer. He was born in Rojas, a small town in Buenos Aires Province. Sabato began his studies at the Colegio Nacional de La Plata. He then studied physics at the Universidad Nacional de La Plata, where he earned a Ph.D. He then attended the Sorbonne in Paris and worked at the Curie Institute. After World War II, he lost faith in science and started writing.

By request of President Raúl Alfonsín, he presided over the CONADEP commission that investigated the fate of the desaparecidos during the Dirty War of the 1970s. The result of these findings was published in 1984 bearing the title Nunca Más (Never Again).

Novels
1948: El túnel (Translated by Harriet de Onis in 1950 as The Outsider and again by Margaret Sayers Peden in 1988 as The Tunnel.)
1961: Sobre héroes y tumbas (Translated by Helen R. Lane in 1981 as On Heroes and Tombs.)
1974: Abaddón el exterminador (Translated by Andrew Hurley in 1991 as The Angel of Darkness.)
In my opinion, one of our greatest writers.

Terrible news. I can only hope this raises awareness of his work here in the States.

Too bad people don't know who he really is.
Although of his literature work, Sabato is one of the supporters of the Argentinian Dictatorships of 1955 and 1976-1983.
He supported the "Theory of the 2 Demons"; which pledges that the military forces responded to the attacks of civilian paramilitar forces (ERP, Montoneres and others).
In reality Paramilitar Civilian Forces (or as the called themselves revolutionary forces), were pretty much diminished before the Dictators took hold of the Government.

There is no rationalization that can or will explain the use of military force against civilians. There was no real threat to the government, the country or any other country by the revolutionary forces. Though there were crimes committed by them (Kidnapping, ransom, theft, there is no reason to make the president and its committee resign on force.

(PS: I'm Argentinian)

Related to his literature work, I couldn't really make an opinion as I have read little to none of his work.
