Anachronism or other oddities

Here I am, been technogeek programmer, who is an avid ebook reader, and I just thought of how absurd I am at times. At the moment I decided to start writing a book, as I am wont to do, and rather than typing it up, my first instinct was to grab my fountain pen and a notebook. Anyone else here have some quirks or preferences that can be see as at odds with your technolust?

Oh yes. I really do prefer to take pen to paper when writing. I keep a journal & love to write with colored inks. And I still write letters to people. E-mail & FB have their place...But sometimes a letter is what is needed for a situation.

I'm inordinately fond of my Waterman 'Phileas'.

It's all about what works, and what you like. I only discovered fountain pens as an adult, but I loved the feel in my hand. It took me a long time to find the one I really liked, but that's it. I love it. Is it the most efficient way to write? No, any more than my favorite hat is the most efficient way to keep sun off my head. But I like it. Them.

Though I am an undeniable geek in most areas, I, too, prefer to take pen to paper for some writing. I think it taps into a different part of the brain than typing does.

Also, sometimes when I'm in my home studio recording something, I miss my old analog four-track. I don't even know why, really.

It's below my dignity to buy .mp3, as it is the worst that ever happened to the quality of music (I buy .flac though).

We have a saying in Norway: "Never say never". But one thing is certain; I will *never* voluntarily buy, or use, any apple product.

I don't have, and probably will never have, a facebook account. (Actually I know the other person in Norway without FB ).

I was never too fond of handwriting (and a doctor would envy my handwriting), but still carry a small notebook with me all the time, as opposed to type everything into the cellphone or other technical device. Being lefthanded I don't like fountain pens, but prefer a pencil instead.

My daily use FP is a TWSBI Diamond 530 (check out fountainpennetwork.com for reviews, mods, etc), and I also use a Pelikan M200 a lot.

ardeegee, you're not the only one. I've really never had an interest in one.

CWatkinsNash, well, despite digital being easier for many things, it just doesn't have the same feel or quality. Right now, I'm talking with a friend about building some tube amps. Transistors just ain't the same.

I still love stationery and pens and paper clips even though I write on my PC most of the time.
Last January I had a long 25-page assigment to write and guess what? Wrote in longhand first in a tiny notebook (took me double the page number). For some weird reason, I can't focus on long essays when I can't see, feel and hold the entire text in my hands.
I still print out research materials (articles and stuff) and proceed to heavily and colourfully underline passages...

I am not keen on manual writing at all. Being a left hander, my writing generally looks like the trail of a spider on a drunken binge.

Conversely, I was trained as a drafter before formalising my engineering qualifications and that was back before computers. So my hand printing (drafting pen on drawing film) is very good.

If I do need to handwrite, eg notes, jottings etc, I print only.

I don't see that it (usage of a fountain pen) qualifies as an anachronism --- there has yet to be invented a more perfect / expressive portable writing instrument (a quill is even better, but wears quickly, requires a container of ink, needs a cutting surface and quill pen...).

(I used a Sheaffer fountain pen in high school, then purchased a Platignum calligraphy pen which I used for roughly 2 decades, until the top wore to the point of falling off when in my pocket, switched to a Sheaffer Agio which only lasted a few years before developing the same issue, so am now using an Esterbrook Dollar pen and a 9312 medium italic nib --- bought a new Aurora Hastil, but still debating whether or no it's too slim to use).

William
(who also used to hang out on fountainpennetwork.com)

That's one of the things that people don't seem to get with pens anymore. People always seem baffled at how much one of my pens cost, and I really haven't spent much on pens (My M200 is the most expensive I've bought, and I got a deal on it at $56, the rest are sub $40). Meanwhile, that pen will last for decades, and when parts eventually wear out, I can fix it. How much money will they spend on disposable pens in that period? My stepdad spends like $20 a year on pens. Factor that over the lifetime of my pen, with ink and everything in mind, I come out way cheaper in the long run. Plus, it requires less pressure, so my arm hurts less, and I get all sorts of fun things to play with on it like colors, etc.

I think don't think that $50-$100 or so is very expensive for a device you use often and enjoy using.

But disposable pens are ridiculously cheap - you can buy 60 bic pens for $5 on Amazon...and nicer retractable pens are something like $10 for 12.

Of course my problem is not that I wear pens out; it's that I lose them. Maybe I would be less likely to do that if I had a less disposable pen.

I rather like writing by hand, too. I don't much care if technical pencil or my (cheap) fountain pen from school, but there are less distractions than on an internet-enabled computer. :P

Regarding the general question, well, I don't have a smartphone, and hardly ever use SMS. I've got a cellphone, but it's switched off most of the time.

Does hardly ever eating ready-made food count? I rather like making pizza from scratch.
