Hello & and I've got a question

I am the publisher for a small company, Gabriel Publications. Our books are mostly real estate marketing books. We are now considering getting into the ebook world. I have about 100 coauthors around the USA who most likely have Kindle, iPads, and possibly the Nook or Kobo.

Before going to hard copy, our books are finished in PDF format. To convert to Word or something else would mean extra cost so I'm trying to find if the above four formats can use PDF...or who I can go to who will take a PDF and convert possibly to the above four formats.

I apologize if this question has been posted before.

Welcome.

When you say 'finished in PDF format' I assume you mean your prepress files. What are those prepress files done in? InDesign, Quark???

Basically to cover the devices you mention above you're looking at two formats, ePub (iPad, Nook, Kobo, Sony, etc.) and Mobipocket (Kindle). PDF is generally not a format most ebook users prefer, although there are circumstances when it might be desirable.

Are your books mainly text or do they have lots of diagrams, tables, images, etc?

They are currently done in InDesign.

The books are mostly text. Almost no graphics.

There were originally done with the text file Textpad. Then they went through Ventura to become a PDF. I may be able to access the Ventura file which would be the prepress final before PDF.

Try not to use PDF as the source for the ebooks if possible ...

Have a look here e-book Software and e-book formats.....

For books done directly in InDesign an ePub can be created with some work (unless you're just importing PDF's into ID and using it for final layout or something). If you can get a good ePub then you can generally use that as the basis for a Mobi file as well.

No idea if current versions of Ventura have any way of doing ePub (are they still making Ventura?).

You'll probably want to repost your question in the ePub forum where the ePub guru's hang out...
