Is Honeycomb Android's Vista? -- ZDNet

Quote:
By mid-2008, over 180 million copies had been sold.
Quote:
So what was wrong with Vista? There were a number of individual problems such as incompatibility with older devices, and a penchant for asking for security permission on many common operations. But I think the biggest one was perception.
Quote:
Lately, I see Honeycomb being maligned in the press. Jason Perlow called it “half-baked” and “a piece of junk”. John Paczkowki says the Motorola Xoom (the first tablet to run Honeycomb) is “at best a dud, at worst a bomb”. Is that perception or reality?
Quote:
The way forward for Google and Android is clear. Don’t bother defending Honeycomb - just get the next version (”IceCream”) out the door.

What Windows 7 did for Vista, IceCream will do for Honeycomb.
It is an interesting editorial because most reviews that I've read have been hardware critical, not software...

sounds like the article is more for traffic generating than for info.

one sad thing about honeycomb is how google allowed it to be put on any device when it's not even ready.

the real question is, will Ice Cream (Sandwich) be Android's Windows 7.

Comparing HoneyComb 3.0 to Windows Vista (disaster OS) plagued with one issue to another issue. Now Android OS 3 only issue that there isn't enough apps to run on that OS where all the current apps are from the cupcake era 1.5, 1.6 then skip over 2.0 to 2.1, 2.2, 2.3 is where most of these apps are. Some apps can't run on certain OS version too. Won't run after you install it.

Android OS free opensource, yet HoneyComb 3.0 can only be installed on certain hardware devices that can support it and all these devices are running Tera2 Dual Core where most of the DC are only performing at SC levels.

HoneyComb was the first true Tablet OS for Android. Ice Cream Sandwich 4.0 should fix some glitches from HoneyComb. I think the ideal should have been all those Single Core with 800MHz or higher should have been allowed to use run HC. Not just limited to new Tablets that can have Cell contracts only. Seems like some kind of new way to sell the product on given tablet models.

Still Tablets from China sold more with COBY, CRAIG, CURTIS/Sylvania can only get the OS 2.1, OS 2.2 and Ginger Bread OS 2.3 Phone OS for their lower priced Tablets. These are selling more by HSN, QVC, ShopNBC, CVS, Walgreens, Amazon, Buy.com an etc.

Frankly all these Android tablets pretty much do the same exact features. 7" is popular because all the current apps can fit on the that screen size. Once you move up to 8", 9", 10" you start to see why you you need a 7".

the company making the os actually released the os at the same time as the hardware that ran the os.

google has not released the source yet and said they won't until it's finished. what's running on the tablets is unfinished code.

i never had a problem with vista on any of my computers nor on all the computers i maintained at work.

It's a development image, only. It's got issues that you can't fix without the source code.

Yes, Google is trying to use Honeycomb to prop up Android tablet makers and wind up just hurting themselves. They should release the source code and let hackers and developers anywhere find ways to improve it -- just like the phone versions of Android. The "enemy" should be Apple, not people who want Honeycomb on older devices.

Why?

Apples existence in no way precludes you from having a usable and functional tablet experience on your Android device. And having a usable and functional tablet experience on your Android device will not preclude Apple users from enjoying their iPad.

That is the way business works, trying to get ahead of the competition -- I assume that Google has plans to become the market leader in tablets. And for that they need to improve the honeycomb experience.

I agree. Google should focus less on " beating enemies" and more on improving their products based on their unique philosophy and approach, a large part of they have so many enthusiastic Android users in the first place. Apple isn't the enemy, complacency and lack of focus is the enemy.

Leave the whole "beat Apple!" stuff to the fanboys

Are you for real KJK? The two kings of anti-competitive behavior slugging it out (Google strangling competitors via their search engine listings and bullying small companies into selling out --- Apple with silly lawsuits, actively creating component shortages, and forcing suppliers and content providers int0 special deals with them) and you talk about "a world full of love, live and let live"? And then calling somebody who has just bought a Windows tablet (because Honeycomb falls short of my needs) an Android fanboy, someone who even has placed quotation marks around the word enemy? Good one!

I was commenting that Google has lost its way with Honeycomb, and they need to focus on providing a better user experience than Apple --- as Google has so successful done with Android phone OS.

I didn't call you a fanboy, I said leave the "beat Apple" talk to the fanboys

I don't see how treating Apple (or Microsoft, or RIM, or HP) as "the enemy" helps anyone at this stage. The tablet market is huge and wide open right now-obsessing about other companies as the "enemy" just seems silly, when you could be busy focusing on what your customers want and competing on quality of experience. You don't need an enemy to do that.

Why do we compare Android OS to Apple OS they're completely different in many ways. Android always going to be a work-in-progress OS. The tablet releases and those who make the tablet are not allowed to install Android Market on them is just complete nonsense. First opensource then there making apps for $0.00 or higher. I don't see the gain on opensource free OS then we have to pay for beta software that still buggy. Tablet idea is great but frankly I only see one bug after another with 18 tablets and some of these e-readers that are trying to be made into a tablet just can't do it with all sorts of issues. Just plain bad hardware in some.

Well I see this debate going to go on and on. HoneyComb biggest issue is the color bug which is internal gives you null. How that didn't get catch and now the rush is on for either Android OS 3.1 or just pull out the Android OS 4.0 to fix that major glitch so everyone now will say we can run this on smartphone and tablet.

Back at the Terga2 camp they have told everyone that dual core is operating at 1GHz which would make it 2GHz but actually it's only running at 550MHz on each core to reduce increase battery that would give you 1.1GHz. Where their single core which was 1GHz was running at max. So performance wise on a web browser would be 146% higher than is was with a signal core 1GHz at 100%.

These companies don't care about the consumer they do anything to make money and that's what way it is. HP look they sell you dirt cheap color ink printers then you have to replace the ink and that ink cost more than what you paid for the printer. So what do you do? Most just go and buy a new printer then go and spend more for the same printer. Best to just buy a only laser, but that toner can get expensive as well.

Money is being made no matter what we all say.
