iPod as an ereader - how to download Stanza from Ubuntu
Hi. Newbie still. I have a collection of ebooks on Ubuntu/Calibre laptop syncing with Sony 650. But also would like to load Stanza on an iPod Touch but can't find how to upload the app to the iPod from Ubuntu. Am I missing the point?
I have downloaded Banshee but so far it appears to be a sync platform for the iPod as an alternative to iTunes. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Seems to be counter-intuitive - no website address the issue of uploading apps from Ubuntu. |

I use Calibres built-in book server to transfer my files. The server allows me to access my calibre books from the web browser (safari) and when I tap on them, I get the Safari page saying "Open in", and there I can choose to open the book in iBooks, Stanza, Kobo or any other program i have on my iad without needing to use iNuisance (iTunes).
Dropbox can be used in the same way since you can get dropbox as an ipad app and also install it under linux Last edited by Iznogood; 04-27-2011 at 05:18 AM. Reason: Typo |

Thank you for your prompt reply. You may be assuming I know more than I do about iPod. We have a bog standard iPod with a load of wifey's music on it - good for travelling. But I don't know how to upload an ereader app (or any app for that matter) to the little device. We're away from home where there's an iMac and here in Tokyo using an Ubuntu laptop with an ethernet connection to the internet. We don't have a wifi account for the iPod in Tokyo. Am I still missing the point? Download Stanza ereader app to my laptop, then what?

Ah, sorry. I misinterpreted the question I think. You want to upload the app via cable from your PC to the iPod and not to upload books from your computer to the ipod? Is that correct? That could prove difficult since the iDevices are built for downloading directly from Apple store, but I think (note that I am not sure about this) that if you have iTunes, you can drag-and-drop the installation file and let iTunes install it. I don't know of any other program that kan do this since iTunes is the only program that knows the inside of your iPod. I have heard that iTunes is possible to install on ubuntu with Wine, but have not tried it myself, and can not give any guarantee that it will work

Thank you again for this. Yes, the real question is how to upload an app to the iPod from Ubuntu/laptop. I'm sure Calibre or Banshee will manage the ebook library - I have a reasonable collection on Ubuntu/Calibre laptop syncing with Sony. It may be possible to get Win/iTunes working under Wine - but haven't researched that yet. Dropbox - do you think that could upload an app as well as epubs?

You could try to visit an internet café or something, hook the ipod to wifi and download from appstore, I think that would be the easiest. I'm shure Tokyo has quite a few of these cafees |

You need to use iTunes to install apps on the iPod, or use the iPod directly (wi-fi). Those are the only ways I know of to install apps. You can't copy an app file to the iPod any other way (except for jailbreaking - I don't know if you can even do that to an iPod).

Thanks SusanC, RainingL and Norway for the contributions. Stanza and ReaderLight apps are finally onboard the iPod. We did it at a friend's house here in Tokyo. Now the challenge begins - to sync our Ubuntu/Calibre library. Will attempt some of the suggestions at the thread at https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...d.php?p=391919
Thanks again. G |
