Newbie with a Sony Prs650

Hello, I have just treated myself to one of these devices and was looking forward to being able to purchase and read books of my choice. Oh was I so disillusioned! I had the misfortune to use on of the biggest ebook retailers who supply drm material. Nothing worked and my blood pressure rose accordingly! Their support staff did not seem interested either! Somehow after much toing and froing I managed to download then copy the downloaded books by using Apple mac drag and drop? I have been in touch with the CEO of this organisation and they say they are looking into my comments.

I can understand why people want to protect their material but so many different systems are totally unnecessary. If they must lock files this way surely a way forward is to use the unique identifier in most electronic devices to form part of the unique unlock key so that in the event of piratiing they can trace back to that device.

I came across a retailer who I would encourage you to use - www.ink-slinger.com. They were helpful and welcoming

Regards Ian Robertson

Hello Ian,

you bought yourself a wonderful device. I am sorry your first buying experience what not what it should have been, but actually it is pretty easy to buy content for your Sony.

There are two shops you can't buy with unless you tinkerwith the DRM: Amazon and B&N.

Every other story is fine as long as you buy epub. You can shop with Kobo, Smashwords, Sony Reader Store and a zillion others. Only make sure when given different file formats to go for the epub.

Here is a sticky with other shop recommendations.

Hope you enjoy your new reader!

Oh, I forgot to mention our huge library here the Patricia Clark Memorial Library.

And there is also a Deals & Freebies section where members do a lot of work uploading daily the latest free books and deals for us.

If you ever need inpiration about what to read or would like to join a book club there is Reading Recommendations with a book of the month discussion and lots of other book talk.

Good to have your company, Ian. If you visit http://www.calibre-ebook.com, you'll find a section called 'Open Books' which lists publishers who offer DRM-free contemporary work. Also, the free Calibre Library software beats all others (especially Sony's poor effort), and excellent Sony hardware and Calibre Library is a marriage made in heaven. Very best wishes. Neil
