If you are on the market looking for a Nook 1st gen, would you consider Kindle 3 now that Public Libraries and lending will be supported? Or, if you own a Nook 1st gen., would you sell and get one instead?

Yes for me. I'm in the market for an eink device. Not interested in the current Kindles though. Anticipating something new end of year. No longer considering Sony.

If I owned a nook and was thinking of maybe changing, I would hang onto it and see what comes out towards the end of the year from B&N, Sony, & Amazon and then decide what I wanted to do.

Obviously the nook and nookcolor are hurting the Kindle and that is why they have opened up to library books; however they still are keeping their own format instead of going with epub and allowing you to purchase from other sources.
So no, makes no difference to me. |

This is why competition is good. Amazon added lending functionality and Library support to the Kindle, probably in reaction to the advantages that Barnes and Noble's devices offer.
There are still three things that the nook offers that I'm not prepared to give up: 1. Sd Card support (for black and white graphic novels--which take up a lot of space) 2. Epub format (out of convenience) 3. I like seeing my covers in color (superficial, but enjoyable nonetheless) Last edited by Noah98; 04-20-2011 at 09:12 PM. |

Nook Color is not an eink reader, so I won't make any comments or comparisons, but Pandigital sold way more devices than B&N Nook Color. And please, let's stop the myth that you can only buy from Amazon and Kindle users are locked, because is not true. I have books from different vendors/stores on my Kindle and they all are legal. Wait, so kindle is going to support epub from libraries?
If it is not epub, it's worthless. |

No, libraries are going to lend in kindle format. So you will now have the option what format to download in when you borrow.

I just brought my nook classic. *sigh* There were two primary reasons why I didn't buy the Kindle:
1) No library lending support 2) I want to do my little tiny part to keep book competition alive Reason one no longer exists. However, reason two still does. I have the sinking feeling that .azw format is going to become the preferred or only format supported by libraries in the future. In which case, I'll be forced to buy a Kindle since a good chunk of the e-books I read come from the library. On the one hand, I'm happy that Kindle users can borrow from the library now. On the other hand, I do feel like this is going to make it that much harder for any real competition to Amazon to come about in the US. Last edited by faithbw; 04-20-2011 at 08:18 PM. |

I already own an Kindle, but I find I'm reading 100% on my nookColor using (Moon+/Kindle 4 Droid).
All I have to say is B&N entrance to the eBook space was the best thing that happened to the Kindle camp. Since B&N has been in the market, Amazon has had to respond to every initiative B&N has taken. |

While I like the nook's ability to read library books (and my local library just joined overdrive), the real reason why I bought it over the Kindle was the removable microSDHC card support. I already had close to 4 GB of ebooks before I bought it, the Kindle 3 is limited to 4 GB.

Having 3 or 4 major products in any market is good for the consumer. I am waiting to see what is the next volley in this competition. It would help if that promised update than B&N has promised actually materializes sometime soon.

I am a first gen Nook owner, and I have no desire for a Kindle. Never have, and probably never will. The Nook gave me everything I needed and wanted from the start. Can't imagine at this point, abandoning my Nook and all of my Nook products to jump on the Amazon bandwagon. For what?
