Content sharing on Kindle in docs created with Calibre
I made a previous thread (here) about this issue. I have since narrowed down the problem to a change in Calibre that happened sometime between version 0.7.35 and version 0.7.45. I suspect that the change happened around the new year in the flurry of updates that happened and I was going back one version at a time, but it was very onerous, so I found a file that I knew worked, created with an older version, and went back to that version (which happened to be 0.7.35). All updates from the current version 0.7.56 through 0.7.45 exhibit the same glitch.
Using the Kindle, you can highlight text of a document and are given the choice to add a message/note and then share your message and the text online. It uploads to your Facebook, Twitter, and/or your user profile at https://kindle.amazon.com/. Once you have highlighted text, it looks like this: ![]() When you press alt+enter, and it is successfully shared, you see this message: ![]() In files created by newer versions of Calibre, however, you see this error: ![]() If there is any way to narrow down what change happened in Calibre affecting the conversion of documents to the MOBI format for use on Kindle between the old and new versions, I'd really appreciate it! In the meantime, I have downgraded to an older version, but if there's any way to get a fix I'd appreciate it! Last edited by hoyasaxa; 04-18-2011 at 11:41 PM. |

The only change I can think of is the change to add a UUID to the ASIN field to enable Amazon's book syncing across multiple apps. I suspect Amazon turns of content sharing because it assumes books with something in the ASIN field are copyrighted.

think there could be a way to make it optional to use the fields causing a problem?

@hoyasaxa - this isn't in response to your question but when you said above that you "downgraded" - did you have a backup of your earlier database that you used with that after you rolled forward as far as 0.7.56? As there were some pretty significant database changes between versions and there is a good chance you may end up with some real problems (the whole change to isbn/identifiers comes to mind but I'm sure there are probably others).
Downgrading calibre isn't supported, unless you are using the backup from that earlier version. Would hate to see you have some serious issue when you try to roll forward again. |

This is not something I care enough about to implement, but patches are welcome.

So does this mean that the only way for us to be able to post notes again would be to install the old version of Calibre?
I sure hope there's a workaround ![]() |

Correct. You need to roll back to an earlier version, which means you lose the cloud sync of furthest read location and apparently the "real" page numbering (vs locations) is not fully implemented.

Does anyone know if this has been fixed in the latest version of Calibre (version 0.8.9?) I will download and test if anyone is interested.

I appreciate the quick response. Unfortunately I am not a programmer. I would be more than happy to patch the software to restore the functionality but I'm completely ignorant when it comes to software authoring.
Anyone else want to take up the mantle on this one? I'm fairly certain that Kovid can point you in the right direction if someone wants to actually do the work. |

This is clearly a *bug* and needs to be fixed. It has to be something fairly simple, as well. I can share just fine with other mobi books or just about anything that wasn't processed in any way by Caliber, but the instant Caliber touches anything it becomes impossible to share it on Facebook. My assumption (like a lot of others) was that Facebook sharing wasn't supported by any document that wasn't purchased for Kindle, but that isn't the case.
