page turning habits
I hope this doesn't seem petty, but I have got used to using the right hand side buttons for page turning on my PRS-505. It's so comfortable to hold in just the right hand, twitching my thumb to 'turn' the page. I must appear a little like a statue when i'm engrossed with reading lol.
Anyway, I am thinking about upgrading to the PRS-350 and am worried I'll lose this completely comfortable/lazy page turning as the buttons are no longer there. thumb swiping seems like a lot of effort. Can you just touch the right side of the panel to 'turn' the page? ![]() Mike Last edited by ChefDude; 04-18-2011 at 06:08 AM. Reason: typo |

I believe the 350 has page turn buttons, the 650 certainly does.
And no, you can't just touch the screen it needs to be a swipe, however the swipe doesn't need to be across the screen. And yes it does sound petty ![]() |

Actually, just touching the screen on my 950 DOES turn pages. Even something like a beard hair (I'm bearded and tend to pull on it when reading/deep in thought, so I've had more than a few hairs fall on the screen and turn pages for me). It's not consistent though. You can swipe UP/Down to change pages too. Though for one-handed reading, I just use the buttons at the bottom of the device.

I had a small fly land on my 950 screen and start scurrying around on the screen setting off a very fast sequence of page turns until I could shoo the fly away.

When I first got my PRS200 (ages ago) I would find myself occassionaly reaching up to the top right of the reader to manually turn a paper page! Now I swipe.

The page turn buttons are on the left side of the 350, with guys hands they might be comfortably reached with the thumb of your right hand, but I am not sure about it.
I read mine all the time one handed and do the page turns with my right thumb. The direction of the swipe can be changed from <---- to ----> and it only take a few millimeters of motion. It is the most wonderful little reader and with the dictionaries only a double tap away you will get much more out of your reading. Get one, you will love it. And yes, it sounds petty. |

I'm right handed, and hold my 650 with my left hand, freeing up my dominant hand for the touchscreen stuff, and clicking the FORWARD button with my left thumb as I read.

Doesn't sound petty. It's an ebook reader so it should be optimized for reading (turning pages). Why make it harder then it needs to be?

I generally hold my 350 with my left hand & do a slight flick or swipe to turn pages. My Sony isn't as sensitive as some. I've had things land on it & no page turning. BUT I've also found holding it with my right hand and turning pages just as easy. I prefer the touch screen turning to the buttons. That was one reason I went to the Sony because I found my thumb getting numb turning pages from the side button on my Kindle3. Some people have no problems with it, but I did.

A neat feature of the PRS-350 is the ability to swipe and hold for a multiple page turn. This is really fast compared to a normal page turn. Usually 2-3 pages per second. The pages appear with less contrast and clarity than usual, but this is still a really useful feature; especially when you are trying to locate a reference in the previous chapter.

On my 650, I can turn the page with just a small swipe using my right thumb, never moving my hand off the reader.
Alternatively, using PRS+, I can use the right hand buttons on the bottom when I prefer holding the reader at the bottom. |

I nurse while I read so I switch from holding the reader witrh my right hand to my left hand and vice versa. Which ever hand is holding the reader does a small swipe with my thumb. It is one handed and works well. I love the touch screen!

The way the Sony does it is perfectly fine for many, and I'd tell the OP it's not as bad as it sounds, but I agree with her that it's easiest when the buttons are on the sides and easy to press without repositioning our fingers. I do miss that ease when I'm using the Sony 350, and in some positions, it's truly annoying, but it's not a deal-breaker. Quote:

That is how I do it as well.My thumb rests on the button while reading, and for turning the pages I just press down.
