Wifi settings via a text file (?)

I'm on vacation and I haven't been able to type the WPA key into my kindle (neither can my husband on his kindle, although it worked on both our laptops).

Is there a way to put the key into a text file and sideload it into the kindle?

I don't know much about the Launchpad hack (see the developers' forum) but maybe you could load the wpa key into one of its "options" and then "force feed" it into the data entry on the kindle. I do not believe there is a generic cut/paste ability.

I have also read the complex passwords/keys may not always work on kindles and to avoid mixed letters/numbers/symbols. But that might be urban legends.

Yes, if you're willing to hack your Kindle, you can use Launchpad. What you would do is set your WPA key under one of the keystrokes, and then when it asks for the password, you press the keystroke.

EDIT: If you take the time to type the key, it should indeed work. What I said above assumed that the WPA key is too long to type manually. Does the internet have one of those launch pages where they require you to login or pay?

It really should work, though it can be challenging to type (but you only need to succeed once). Does your password use characters which you can't type in, or what seems to be the issue?

The key is entirely capital letters and numbers. Between having to hit shift for every letter, alt and then counting out the unmarked numbers for each number, and the passwords changing to stars too quickly, neither of us can type in our keys fast enough.

If there was either a way to lock shift and then lock alt, it might be possible to type in the password by hand.

I'll try launchpad.

What do you mean fast enough? You get unlimited time. And you could try holding the shift button.

You can take all the time you want--the stars are only for security purposes, your letters/numbers don't actually turn into asterisks.

The only time I experienced this with a Kindle was when the wireless was set up only to approve pre-approved users with pre-set IP addresses. If this is the case, it can be done, but it's a pain and you'll want help from whoever set up the wifi.

Someone should give me back the hours of my life that i spent trying to type the wifi keys on my kindle in hotels around the world. There must be a secret powerful worldwide lobby which wants such keys to be as kindle-unfriendly as possible. I suspect it is backed by Apple.

Amazon should get Broderbund to produce a Mavis Beacon game specifically for Kindle. For that matter Broderbund should release iOS and Android variants (of course there are already many such apps for those platforms). Tiny, non-ergonomic keyboards are the Future!!
