Nook Colour Coming to me in New Zealand
for me but it looks like what i have read in the last day about this gift is it will be more of a BRICK than of any use due to B&N making it more than impossible to do much with it outside the shores of the USA Continent.
Of course i want to Root it and run Android's Honeycomb but now it seems it needs to be Registered 1st with B&N and that looks impossible. Most annoying thing is that they are constantly sending me emails about new titles for the Nook and that i should get one (for the last year).. for all kinds of reasons but when you do and a family friend goes out of their way to help out (and here's no obvious DO NOT BUY ONE WARNING IF YOU ARE NOT GOING TO USE IT IN THE USA on their website) you have to really ask if B&N know what they are trying to achieve. Still, oh well, just going to have to wait and see what happens. Seems all really silly in this day and age to me... |

Why can't you register it ? if you don't have wi-fi at home go down to the local MacDonalds and use their free wi-fi.. B&N would love to sell their product all over the world but the publishers won't let them sell the books outside the US ...that is not B&N fault! I don't know if they have changed their policy, but in the past they never would ship a reader outside the US, everyone complained that they had to use a 3rd party to get the reader. Also if they noticed that the 3rd party was a freight forwarder they would send the buyer an email to contact them where they would explain in detail the restrictions so you understood, but they would still send it, if you said you did understand. I believe they have stopped doing that last bit because of complaints from people. So I have no idea what you are complaining about ,, you said you want to root it.. so I guess you don't want to use the B&N shopping feature.. that is the only restriction with their readers outside the US... B&N have sold a large number of nooks and nookcolors outside the US .. I have both and a number of my friends have them working without any problem. Hell if you do a basic root you can install a vpn service on the nookcolor and use their B&N shopping feature as well, just as if you are in the US. |

I was asked if i wanted something as a gift from the States and since i have been with B&N and bought a few real books from them for a while now plus their promotion-emails to me about the Nook, (along with the news i read on the subject of the machine being able to use Android HoneyComb), i thought it the better of all the e-reader machines. As a gadget freak too, i have a huge inexperience of Android (everything I do is mostly Apple Mac or Windows) so this would be a way to learn about current 'other' systems. I have had an iPad Gen1 for some time now and have some 500 titles plus a mountain of .pdf engineering manuals for work on it but the machine i'm finding is actually a heavy beast for bedtime reading. I'm not really that excited by the iPad2 and the Nook just seemed perfect cost-wise against a new iPad and I hope perhaps to load my e-books onto it... and to better the e-book reading experience. Either way I am really excited in the entire technology of touch screen reading devices so we see what happens when my NookColour arrives.... ![]() |

You can use Wifi to register anywhere in the world.
You can buy e-books from the B&N website using your PC: 1. Register your account with an US shipping and billing address. You can use any valid address, just google something. The billing address is not verified at your credit card company so this will work fine. 2. Install a VPN to get an US IP-address. Like Hotspot Shield (free) or alwaysVPN ($8.50). To buy books first start the VPN, when the VPN is active buy your books. You only need to the VPN when buying books. Books that are bought can be downloaded anywhere in the world. If your NC has a Wifi connection they will be automatically downloaded to your NC. |

As I understand it, you only have to register with B&N prior to rooting if you want to be able to use the stock B&N reading ap. Once you root it, you can install whatever reading aps you want from the Android Market. I also have an iPad and other gadgets including an Android phone. I had never rooted the phone so part of my purchase decision was to try out a device that I could "play" with. It really is a lovely toy and I think you will be happy with your gift from the US. I'm planning to take it with my on a trip to NZ in May so I hope it will work there

Well just a headsup to everyone. I now have my NookColor running perfectly in NZ. It took a bit of 'getting all my ducks in a row' and i was able to Register the machine over WiFi at home once i'd flashed it with the new Ver1.2 software having changed a few parameters on my aged Dl-624+ WiFi router (that kind of thing)... The NookColor is perfect for travel and will come with me on my visits back to the States too..
I can see how the NookColor would be the ultimate use weapon for any American Mom who love to read and i can so see what Barnes & Noble are offering as a tool that covers not only books but magazines and newspapers to fill that need. For me as an electronics tech bloke, the next stage will be to Root it so as to run Android Honeycomb on it (so i can learn about this System without the massive outlay for say a Motorola Xoom, similar to my reason to already owning an iPad and an iPhone4 plus MacBooks and multiple PCs). In the meantime i'll enjoy reading a few books and the two purchases I've already made on how to write software for iPhone4 and iPad Apps. NookColor = brilliant, you just need to really know what you are doing to set it up and running plus a bit of patience... Last edited by MorrisTheCat; 04-30-2011 at 08:39 AM. Reason: typos |

You do realize that Google has yet to release the source code for Honeycomb so that the custom ROMs out there are really previews? Check out XDA for more info. You could of course run Honeycomb off an sd card.
