Is Sony PRS 950 screen fragile?

I previously owned two Wacom touch screen ereaders. The screens were super fragile and got damaged within 2 months. Sony PRS 950 apparently uses a different type of screen. Is Sony screen more robust than the Wacom touch screen ?

Well, I would assume it is. Just as a glass mug might be considered fragile. However with normal use, you shouldn't have any problems. I saw on a thread in the Kindle forum, that the Kindle screen has a plastic layer over the glass(i think) substrate. I don't think that's the case with the Sony's though. As I look at it closely, it seems to be just thick glass
Just use it carefully, get a good case, and you should be coasting through book after book.

All screens are sensitive to bending, twisting and too much pressure. Normal use does not affect them, most people have their readers for a couple of years. Check your reading habits, is it possible you apply some kind of twisting force to it, when you hold it in your hands? Also a sturdy cover is a must have. When transporting it in a backpack it is advisable to put it into some kind of hard case, someone suggested tupper ware, which seems to be an excellent idea.

Short answer: No more sensitive than any other e-ink reader.

Slightly longer answer:
Normal touchscreens use a capacitive or resistive layer on top of the screen which is transparent and probably made of glass or some other easily broken material.

The x50 series of readers there is no extra layer on top of the standard e-ink screen. As I understand it touch recognition in the x50 Sony readers works by having an array of infrared LEDs along in the body of the device itself along a vertical and a horizontal edge of the screen, with receivers in the opposite edges. When your finger touches the screen it interrupts the "grid" of infrared beams and the device figures out the coordinates of the point where the light was interrupted and registers it as a "touch".

yes , the screen is very fragile, an earbud from a pair of earphones accidentally dropped on my screen, the painful result, a permanent black spot on my screen. I know it wasn't there before, thoroughly checked the screen for defects when i got it. its tiny, u have to look for it, but i know its there :-(
