Converting MobiPocket content
A lot of public libraries now offer content for the Mobipocket reader that is DRMed. Is there a way to convert those for the Sony Reader?

No. Can't be done, to the best of my knowledge - which is precisely why it's so widely used, of course.

Or one finds a way to break the format's DRM (upon buying the file)...or reads books that are DRM-free, thus saving a buttload of money. Also, by not padding the pockets of companies that rely on closed formats, one sends the financial message to them that the buying public desires freedom.

Mobi and DRM
Beartard,
Hey, if you want to find a way to hack out the DRM of Mobipocket, have at it! I would *love* to be able to move my Mobi books from machine to machine to machine... Until then, I guess I'll settle for buying a reader which has a decent-sized display, light weight AND the ability to read Mobi ebooks - even if I *DO* have to pony up $350 to get it. Derek Quote:

Why is it that Mobi format books are more expensive?

Actually you can snag and send to pdf as image or ocr; if you really want to do it, you can even write a script to do the snagging automatically; of course it takes some time, but less than regular print scanning.

A good salesman, even if tongue-in-cheek. Your recent posts sound like you're going to be pushing Amway or Tahitian Noni Juice on the general public at some point.

MobiPocket is no better or worse then then most of the other ebook formats out there. In fact the price makes it worse. More expensive.

Would you mind elaborating what you mean by "snagging" it? |

What I would love to see is a device that has a 16-shade vizplex screen, 10" screen with high enough resolution to read PDF, support for Digital Editions, MobiPocket, and BBeB as well as HTML, text, chm and full RTF (images and links) support. I think that would give us a device that would keep us going for a long time to come.
